Dear all,
I'm sending below information about the Summer B DL course DIG3152 Introduction to Electronic Textual Editing. I would be grateful if you could please share with any students who might be interested.
Sincerely,
Clayton
Dear students,
DIG3152 Introduction to Electronic Textual Editing is a Summer B online (DL) course in which students publish digital editions of archival documents. Participants will learn to use TEI-XML, the international standard for text encoding in the humanities, and Omeka, an open-source platform that archives, museums, and other cultural institutions use to make collections available online.
This summer, we will work on documents that will become part of the Viola Muse Digital Edition, a project led by Dr. Laura Heffernan and Dr. Tru Leverette of the Department of English, as well as myself. Viola Muse conducted interviews and gathered stories in LaVilla and other historically Black neighborhoods of Jacksonville in the 1930s as part of the Negro Writers’ Division of the Florida Federal Writers Project, and her papers are key sources for the African American history of our city and region.
The students who participated in DIG3152 in Summer 2020 edited a variety of materials related to local history, and their work can be viewed on the website of the North Florida Editorial Workshop<https://nfew.org/>. Over the past year, participants from the course have shared their projects at numerous academic and professional conferences<https://nfew.org/presentations>.
DIG3152 counts toward the minor in Digital Humanities. The course has no prerequisite, and no previous experience is necessary.
An interest meeting for this course will be held on Tuesday, April 27, 2:30-3:30 PM Eastern. You can register here<https://unf.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJEkf-6gqzIrHdBBaA59Y0Kry3F5RaqyTYxM>.
I can also answer questions over email or meet with anyone one-on-one. Please write to me at clayton.mccarl at unf.edu<mailto:clayton.mccarl at unf.edu>.
Sincerely,
Clayton McCarl
