In this last DHWG event of the fall semester scheduled for Friday, November 19, at 2:00 pm EDT and moderated by Hélène Huet (George A. Smathers Librarian), we’re discussing collaborations and digital humanities. The Haitian American Dream challenges colonial immigration narratives and highlights the complex, centuries-old relationship between the people of Haiti and the United States foreign policies that force them to migrate. Alexandra Cenatus’, Ivanna Moreno’s, and Margarita Vargas-Betancourt’s roles as project leaders and disciplinary experts in the Center for the Humanities and the Public Sphere, the George A. Smathers Libraries, and the Mellon Intersections Group on Global Blackness and Latinx Identity highlight the partnerships, resources, and impacts necessary to sustain a local and internationally-relevant digital humanities community at the University of Florida.

Featured Speakers

Ivanna Moreno was selected as a 2019-2020 Fellow for Digital & Inclusive Excellence by the Association of Research Libraries, paving the way for her contributions to The Haitian American Dream Timeline. Following this role, she acted as the Caribbean Data Curation Intern for dLOC as Data: A Thematic Approach to Caribbean Newspapers and recently joined SiriusXM Inc. as an assistant archivist for Spanish language radio content. She holds a BA in Political Science with a minor in history from the University of Florida and aspires to pursue a career in archives and museums.

Alexandra Cenatus holds an M.A in Latin American Studies and a B.A. in Political Science from the University of Florida. Her research interests center on how gender, religion, race, and class interact, focusing on Haiti. In 2015, she received funding from the UF-Duke National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) grant to explore the social role of priestesses in Haitian Vodou. Her M.A. thesis builds on this research and analyzes the ways in which Haiti's social changes affect the economic livelihood of Haitian Vodou priestesses.

Dr. Margarita Vargas Betancourt is the Latin American and Caribbean Special Collections Librarian at the George A. Smathers Libraries of the University of Florida. In 2016, she was part of the team that got the Society of American Archivists’ Diversity Award for the Latin American and Cultural Heritage Archives Section webinar series Desmantelando Fronteras/Breaking Down Borders.
