The Beaches Museum will host a Boardwalk Talk and Exhibit Tour of “Our Land: Indigenous Northeast Florida” on Thursday, March 24 at 6:30 p.m.

Students from the University of North Florida helped to design an exhibit for a course co-taught by Dr. Keith H. Ashley and Dr. Denise I. Bossy in the fall of 2019 called “Public Archaeology and History of Florida Indians.”  Drawing on archaeological and historical evidence, the Indigenous perspective presented in “Our Land” begins 1000 years ago and continues to the present day.

Ashley and Bossy will provide attendees an overview of Jacksonville’s indigenous past from the perspective of the Mocama including migrations, contact with outsiders, long-distance interactions, and technological innovations shaped the pre-contact history of Northeast Florida.

 Following the presentation, guests will be guided through the exhibit where they will be able to view artist depictions and archaeological artifacts as well as a very unique opportunity to hear recordings of the spoken Mocama language.

The Boardwalk Talk is free to Museum members with a suggested $5 donation for non-members.  Attendance is limited and registration is required.
