As part of LISC Creative Placekeeping initiative with the Jacksonville Gullah Geechee Nation Community Development Corporation, students will compile and preserve valuable documents associated with historic sites, oral histories and information about the rich cultural heritage of Gullah Geechee descendants in Duval County. By creating digital records, the CDC can help the Jacksonville community understand the heritage of place by examining the lives of the Gullah Geechee residents in neighborhoods such as Eastside, Cosmo and Durkeeville. The student will collect archival news articles and use digital technology to piece these sites back together in a manner that will help us "understand the true history of this country " - Walter Hood.
