Friends-
Before we finish up grading and take off for the holidays, I wanted to provide a brief recap of the semester’s activities and ask for your feedback on one item for the spring.
First, there were a ton of DHI-affiliated events this semester, including 6 events in the Archives and Memory Speaker Series<https://unfdhi.org/earthawhite/archives-and-memory>, 6 Movies on the House<https://www.unf.edu/moviesonthehouse/index.html> film screenings, 3 events on climate change and environmental law with Dean Randall Abate from GW Law, the DHI Media Lab Open House<https://events.unf.edu/event/digital-humanities-institute-media-lab-open-house> hosted by Dr. Jessica Chandras, and others I may have missed. Thank you to everyone who planned, promoted, and participated in these successful events!
Second, DHI funded a number of student internships this fall. We provided support for Susie Mabry, who has been working with Dr. Anne Pfister on the Papernest Media<https://papernest.domains.unf.edu/> project. Thanks to RealMLS<https://www.realmls.com/>, DHI was also able to support 5 interns in the Archivist-in-Training program, led by Dr. Laura Heffernan and University Librarian Susan Swiatosz. This important program provides experiential learning opportunities to students by pairing them with community partners, affording our students real-world experiences, providing them with mentorship, and equipping them with skills necessary to make an impact in our communities. I had the chance to speak at the RealMLS shareholder meeting where I shared how we were using the funds provided to us, and the crowd erupted into applause. It made me proud to be part of DHI and thankful for the determination of all of you who have worked so hard to see this through despite changes in Federal government support for the Humanities.
Third, as we look to next semester, we have even more reasons to be excited for 2026. We are beginning to plan for the DHI Digital Projects Showcase, where we will display and discuss the many fascinating and innovative activities that DHI faculty, staff, and students have been engaging in. To that end, if you wouldn’t mind responding to a brief survey, it would help us figure out the best date to hold the event. Please click here<https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=-rIp3ymJL0idu2D_TfIkxD2TbkY2SUVIgQc3XDa4PRFUOTM0VFE5TjVFME9LVkNEVDNEMzRKS0kzNC4u> to complete the survey by December 31, 2025. We are also planning a small event at the Bill Brinton Library in Murray Hill to unveil a framed poster commemorating the life and legacy of Brian Sibson, an industrial designer and dreamer who sadly passed away last year. The community gathering will likely be held in late January or early February. More to come!
Finally, I wanted to remind you of an upcoming deadline to submit abstracts for the 2026 Latin American & Caribbean Digital Humanities Symposium<https://guides.uflib.ufl.edu/lac-dh-symposium>, which DHI is co-organizing again thanks to the leadership of Dr. Clayton McCarl. The conference will run from September 8-10, 2026, in person at the UT San Antonio-Downtown campus. The symposium will also offer virtual sessions the week of September 21, 2026. Please submit proposals<https://forms.gle/TMoNBW59DdSnTTMK7> in English, Spanish, Portuguese, or French by January 31, 2026.
For those of you who submitted DHI funding requests for the spring, keep an eye out for an email this afternoon. Thanks again, everyone, especially DHI’s hard-working student assistant, Brenn Long, for making fall 2025 a great success. We’re looking forward to what 2026 brings. Enjoy the winter break, take time to relax and reflect, and see everyone in the new year!
Best,
Josh
