1. Stephen Mulkey is leading a group of his students to Washington, DC, to take a public stand against the new tar sands pipeline. He explains why in this article. http://wwwp.dailyclimate.org/tdc-newsroom/2011/11/stand-for-science Thousands of pipe line protestors surrounded the White House on Sunday. http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/arts-and-life/life/greenpage/thousands-gather-to-protest-transcanada-pipeline-by-encircling-the-white-house-133323108.html

2. The Pacific Northwest is running into the problem of what to do with excessive wind power. The owners of the wind turbines have sued to keep the utilities from turning off the turbines because they lose money. The utilities are considering charging the turbine owners for smart grid facilities for storing excess energy in home heating systems. A minor problem in the big picture, and a pleasant one to contemplate, for once. http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/05/business/energy-environment/as-wind-energy-use-grows-utilities-seek-to-stabilize-power-grid.html?_r=1

3. As the permafrost thaws, so do methane-eating microorganisms. According to a study at the Lawrence Berkeley Lab, over half the methane released as the permafrost decays will be oxidized by the microorganisms. http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn21130-thawing-microbes-could-control-the-climate.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=climate-change

4. New manmade offshore reefs, strategic buttressing of ditches, and encouragement of once unwelcome plants are some of the strategems to allow the Alligator River wetlands of North Carolina to migrate inland as the ocean rises. http://www.miller-mccune.com/environment/alligator-river-refuge-rolls-back-from-rising-sea-36879/

5. Bangkok is sinking and the ocean is rising. Relocation is the likely solution. http://www.pattayadailynews.com/en/2011/11/07/floods-show-what-lies-ahead-for-sinking-bangkok/

6. Georgetown Law now had a Climate Center on line with resources for planning adaptation to climate change. Registration is required. http://www.georgetownclimate.org/adaptation/clearinghouse Resources on the site include the Broward County Florida Climate Change Action Plan (May, 2010). http://www.broward.org/NaturalResources/ClimateChange/Documents/FinalCCActionPlan_forBCBCCappdxB.pdf

7. The International Energy Agency warns that we must organize action to control greenhouse gas emissions by 2017 or risk permanently losing our chance to mitigate global warming. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/2011/nov/09/fossil-fuel-infrastructure-climate-change The Guardian, reliably acute on climate matters, perhaps because it is determinedly free of direct corporate influence, reflects on the IEA’s warning. http://www.guardian.co.uk/environment/damian-carrington-blog/2011/nov/09/iea-energy-outlook-carbon-climate-change

8. The Daily Show exposes science as a scam with the guidance of some politicians. Whew. http://www.thedailyshow.com/watch/wed-october-26-2011/weathering-fights---science---what-s-it-up-to-
