1. A study in Science reports that the carbon cycle is becoming exaggerated, particularly in the northern latitudes. Major ecological changes seem to be at hand. The effects of the increased seasonal discrepancy are not identified in the article. http://www.latimes.com/news/science/sciencenow/la-sci-sn-forests-carbon-20130808,0,524320.story Not only the effects but the causes of the widening cycle remain to be explained. http://www.nature.com/news/northern-forests-rev-up-carbon-cycle-1.13529

2. Perovskites are efficient as the base for solar energy cells and so cheap that the price of panels could fall to $.10-20 a watt. Perovskite cells are now being commercialized by Oxford Photovoltaics. http://www.technologyreview.com/news/517811/a-material-that-could-make-solar-power-dirt-cheap/?utm_campaign=newsletters&utm_source=newsletter-weekly-energy&utm_medium=email&utm_content=20130812 Polymeric solar cells promise to be as efficient as silicon based cells and can be printed like newspapers. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/08/130814101440.htm?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+sciencedaily+%28ScienceDaily%3A+Latest+Science+News%29

3. The World Meteorological Organization has reported on the state of the climate. If you are 28, you have never experienced a month on earth cooler than the 20th century average. http://www.climatecentral.org/news/this-is-what-global-warming-looks-like-16341?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+climatecentral%2FdjOO+Climate+Central+-+Full+Feed NOAA’s yearly climate report finds the greatest changes in the Arctic. http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/aug/06/noaa-report-arctic-ice-climate-change

4. Harry Reid admonishes us not to be afraid to talk about climate change. http://thehill.com/blogs/e2-wire/e2-wire/316833-harry-reid-dont-be-afraid-to-talk-about-climate-change Chris Hayes takes him up on that this Friday at 8 on MSNBC when he presents The Politics of Power. http://tv.msnbc.com/2013/08/06/chris-hayes-the-solution-to-global-warming-is-just-that-global/

5. A new study suggests that reducing soot and methane will have less short-term effect on global heating than we had supposed. http://news.sciencemag.org/climate/2013/08/fixing-climate-not-so-easy

6. A grand solar minimum would offset no more than .3°C of warming. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2013/aug/14/global-warming-solar-minimum-barely-dent

7. Bonds are better suited than equities to financing a transition to renewable energy. The primary limit on the current market for climate-related bonds is lack of appropriate products. http://www.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/climate-bonds-fund-low-carbon-economy
