1. CO2 provides maximum warming about ten years after release, much sooner than the forty-fifty years previously thought. The finding will influence how the social cost of emissions is calculated, and could provide political momentum for mitigation. http://www.climatecentral.org/news/co2-emissions-peak-heat-18394?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+climatecentral%2FdjOO+Climate+Central+-+Full+Feed

2. Dan Barber’s book Third Table (2014) presents a model of eating based on the full range of crops necessary in rotation for sustainable farming—barley, buckwheat, and millet as well as wheat, meat, and dairy. http://e360.yale.edu/feature/interview_dan_barber_how_to_make_farm-to-table_a_truly_sustainable_movement/2803/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+YaleEnvironment360+%28Yale+Environment+360%29
The book on Amazon: http://smile.amazon.com/Third-Plate-Field-Notes-Future/dp/1594204071/ref=sr_1_1_twi_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1417691444&sr=1-1&keywords=third+table Livestock are estimated to account for 14.5% of global emissions—more than those from transport. Eating habits must be part of an effective mitigation strategy. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2014/dec/03/eating-less-meat-curb-climate-change

3. George Monbiot’s book Feral (2013) argues for a model of rewilding which does not restore habitats to some previous state so much as allow them to reform in health as current conditions allow. Both on land and at sea such an approach produces much richer results than traditional conservation practices. http://smile.amazon.com/Feral-Rewilding-Land-Human-Life/dp/022620555X/ref=sr_1_1_twi_2?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1417691344&sr=1-1&keywords=feral+rewilding+the+land+the+sea+and+human+life Feral suggests a new and exciting world on the other side of a transition to a sustainable way of living. Monbiot has for years been one of the most informed voices on climate disruption at the Guardian.

4. France has contracted for a pilot tidal energy program. http://cleantechnica.com/2014/12/03/france-jumps-feet-first-tidal-energy-offshore-wind-come-2015/

5. Energy company NRG has declared its intention to cut its emissions 50% by 2030 and 90% by 2050 through CCS and renewable energy development. The targets are consistent with the necessary energy transition. Thanks to Samuel Klein for the item. 6. “The Newsroom” ran a segment in which a fictitious EPA administrator states that it is too late to avoid catastrophic planetary failure. Peter Sinclair provides that clip, and some professional reaction, including 15 minutes of interview with Michael Mann. http://climatecrocks.com/2014/12/05/glum-and-glummer-or-is-there-a-glimmer-fact-checking-the-newsroom/

7. The Kennedy Space Center on Cape Canaveral has already lost one road and is discussing plans to retreat inland from sea level rise. http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-kennedy-space-center-20141205-story.html
