1. The National Catholic Reporter called climate disruption the “number one pro-life issue.” Evangelicals, perhaps influenced by evangelical climate scientist Katherine Hayhoe, have also begun to waken to the urgency of the issue. http://climatecrocks.com/2014/05/21/climate-change-the-number-one-pro-life-issue/ Some Florida evangelicals are calling for Governor Scott and Senator Rubio to take action on climate mitigation. http://grist.org/news/evangelical-christians-call-on-florida-politicians-to-take-climate-action/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Daily%2520May%252021&utm_campaign=daily

2. Fukushima Prefecture has adopted a goal of 100% renewable energy by 2040. http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/news/article/2014/05/fukushima-japan-rebuilding-communities-with-solar-commits-to-a-100-percent-renewable-energy-by-2040?cmpid=WNL-Wednesday-May21-2014

3. The Army is building three 30-megawatt solar installations in Georgia at or below the avoided cost of fossil fuels. http://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/georgia-power-to-build-solar-for-the-u.s.-army-at-below-the-cost-of-other-s?utm_source=Solar&utm_medium=Picture&utm_campaign=GTMDaily

4. The UN has called a climate summit in New York in late September. Bill McKibben would like us all to be there on September 20-21. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/a-call-to-arms-an-invitation-to-demand-action-on-climate-change-20140521

5. On June 2 the EPA will release emission rules for existing power plants. Grist’s Ben Adler explains how the rules are likely to work (state targets) but the agency is being tight-lipped about the target. The rules will not become final for a year. http://grist.org/climate-energy/heres-what-to-expect-from-obamas-big-new-climate-rules/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=Daily%2520May%252022&utm_campaign=daily

6. Florida is in for a rough time from sea level rise. The southeast is doing better than the rest of the state in facing that, but will suffer the worst effects. http://thinkprogress.org/climate/2014/05/21/3432588/south-florida-fighting-sea-level-rise/
I believe the story is mistaken in saying that the East Coast differential in sea level rise stretches as far south as Florida. Their own reference link states that the effect ends at Cape Hatteras, NC. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/06/25/east-coast-sea-level-rise_n_1624134.html

7. The Energy and Policy Institute has released a 35 page report, “Attacks on Renewable Energy Policy by Fossil Fuel Interests 2013-2014.” http://www.energyandpolicy.org/renewable-energy-state-policy-attacks-report

8. Solar roadways, as durable as asphalt or concrete, not only go to solve the space problem for locating pv but could provide illuminated guidelines at night and self-clean ice and snow in winter (among other benefits). They are said to be ready for commercial deployment. http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/blog/post/2014/05/visualize-solar-powered-roads?cmpid=WNL-Friday-May23-2014
