1. Low temperatures in the mid-latitudes and drought in the American West are often related, and both can be influenced by climate change. Henry Thomas suggested the topic. The 8 minute video from the Yale Forum for Climate Change at the end of the story helps explain. http://climatecrocks.com/2014/09/03/is-the-polar-vortex-a-product-of-climate-change/

2. China has announced a carbon market for 2016. It will be the world’s biggest, and could constitute a significant move toward decarbonisation. They have been experimenting with regional markets since 2011. http://www.carbonbrief.org/blog/2014/09/analysing-china-carbon-market/?utm_source=Daily+Carbon+Briefing&utm_campaign=fb49d54df5-DAILY_BRIEFING&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_876aab4fd7-fb49d54df5-303421297

3. Reuters begins a series on sea level rise by looking at current difficulties in the US. The focus is on the rising problems in Maryland and the failure of everyone from local officials to NASA in coming up with an adequate plan. http://www.reuters.com/investigates/special-report/waters-edge-the-crisis-of-rising-sea-levels/

4. The world’s soil holds about double the carbon of the atmosphere. Rising heat in some areas causes it to become a carbon source, particularly in the Arctic and other cold regions. http://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-29050800

5. A new paper calculates the probability that climate disruption is caused by humans at 99.999%. http://www.9news.com.au/national/2014/09/05/03/43/chances-of-global-warming-being-caused-by-humans-is-99-999-percent-says-csiro

6. Update: the Associated Press relied upon speculation to charge the Ivanpah concentrated solar power plant with killing 28,000 birds. By actual count the figure is 133, January –June this year. http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/news/article/2014/09/for-the-birds-how-speculation-trumped-fact-at-ivanpah?cmpid=WNL-Friday-September5-2014

7. A study of temperatures in Greenland during the last deglaciation supports “the hypothesis that abrupt climate change is mostly a winter phenomenon.” http://www.sciencemag.org/content/345/6201/1177.abstract
