1. The Clean Power Plan sets state emissions allowances and allows states to trade and sell emission credits. That in effect establishes a cap and trade system. Hawaii and Alaska are omitted for the present. http://www.climatecentral.org/news/obama-just-created-a-carbon-cap-and-trade-program-19309

2. The Rolling Stone has interviewed around 24 scientists to assemble an overview of recent climate disruption. http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/news/the-point-of-no-return-climate-change-nightmares-are-already-here-20150805?page=7

3. Fossil fuel interests, including utilities, spent over half a billion dollars lobbying to weaken the Clean Power Plan. They appear to have succeeded in delaying implementation. http://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2015-08-05/what-you-get-for-502-million-a-somewhat-gentler-climate-plan

4. New Zealand now has about 80% renewable energy. It will close its last two coal plants in 2018 and will become 90% renewable by 2025. http://e360.yale.edu/digest/new_zealand_will_shutter_last_remaining_coal_power_plants_officials_say/4503/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+YaleEnvironment360+%28Yale+Environment+360%29

5. The Jason-3 satellite, due to be launched August 8, uses radar to measure ocean height to within an inch. Besides indicating sea level rise it also measures ocean currents and temperature (water column as well as surface). http://www.nesdis.noaa.gov/jason-3/ Jason-3 is a multi-tasker. I haven't been able to confirm that it was actually launched Saturday. http://www.dw.com/en/looking-at-earth-measuring-the-sea-level/g-18634147

6. NASA has begun a six year program to measure the melting of the Greenland ice sheet. OMG (Oceans Melting Greenland) will use robot probes and direct observation to gain a fuller understanding of Green's topography and vulnerability. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/aug/09/omg-nasa-project-oceans-melting-greenland ?
