1. Boko Haram is not causing so much mayhem as it was. The world is dealing better with malaria. Half as many people now live in poverty as did in 1990, more women are using contraception, and life expectancy is up. For the third year in a row, greenhouse gas emissions were flat even as the world's economies grew. 2016 had its good points. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/dec/30/eight-charts-that-show-2016-wasnt-as-bad-as-you-think

2. Not only are solar and wind the cheapest power for utilities in many areas, but solar/wind plus storage is highly competitive as storage prices fall. https://cleantechnica.com/2016/12/29/solar-power-not-merely-least-expensive/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IM-cleantechnica+%28CleanTechnica%29

3. Chris Mooney explains where and how Greenland's Petermann Glacier is becoming unstable. http://www.washingtonpost.com/sf/business/2016/12/30/with-enough-evidence-even-skepticism-will-thaw/

The Petermann Glacier is a large one in the north which connects the Greenland Ice Sheet in general to the Arctic Ocean. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Petermann_Glacier

4. More than half the world's energy investment is already going into fossil fuels. "The energy transition is real, and Mr. Trump is not going to stop it." http://www.nytimes.com/2017/01/02/science/donald-trump-global-warming.html?_r=0

5. The Guardian's John Abraham looks at the good, the bad, and the ugly in 2016's climate developments. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2017/jan/02/climate-change-in-2016-the-good-the-bad-and-the-ugly ?
