1. COP 24 was marked by the open opposition of the fossil fuel industry, and the governments which represent it, to knowledge and action. It also saw consensus on some difficult issues, including the rules for reporting national emissions. The UN will hold a special climate meeting next September, COP 25 in December, and COP 26 the following year. Those meetings will probably be our last chance to commit to programs of action to limit heating to 1.5C. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/dec/17/un-climate-talks-set-stage-for-humanitys-two-most-crucial-years

The mood was more one of relief than triumph on Sunday when the world’s governments eventually found common ground at the UN climate talks in Katowice, Poland.

2. 81% of Americans, including 64% of Republicans, support the Green New Deal. “The Deal would generate 100% of the nation's electricity from clean, renewable sources within the next 10 years; upgrade the nation’s energy grid, buildings, and transportation infrastructure; increase energy efficiency; invest in green technology research and development; and provide training for jobs in the new green economy.” <https://mailchi.mp/yale/how-does-gender-influence-understanding-of-climate-change-2621565?e=4dee1d8b35> http://climatecommunication.yale.edu/publications/the-green-new-deal-has-strong-bipartisan-support/

The Green New Deal as envisioned in Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s legislative project is more ambitious than represented by the Yale survey. https://thinkprogress.org/everyones-talking-about-ocasio-cortezs-green-new-deal-but-no-one-knows-what-it-is-e5b6e5381fec/?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=tp-letters

The Green New Deal championed by Representative-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) is one of the hottest progressive policy ideas around. But virtually no one knows what it is.

3. Glacial rebound is behind most of the variation in sea rise along the US East Coast. When rebound is discounted, sea level rise increases steadily from Maine to Florida, due to recent melt. (Not a word of the slowing of the Gulf Steam, which has often been credited with sea level rise variation in the region.) Over the 20th century, sea level has risen about a foot and a half in coastal communities near Cape Hatteras in North Carolina and along the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia.

4. 125,000 years ago, when climate conditions were like today’s, an ice sheet collapse in the West Antarctic led to a rapid sea level rise of several meters. Next month further core samples will be taken to confirm the finding. The research is unlikely to be able to influence official projections for a year or more. https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2018/12/discovery-recent-antarctic-ice-sheet-collapse-raises-fears-new-global-flood

5. Ecosystems can reach a tipping point and shift to another state irreversibly, as when a coral reef bleaches. An article in Science reports a study of the interactions of 30 such transitions. 45% were related to one or more other transitions, indicating that we have gravely underestimated the potential for mischief among cascading transitions. “It’s a little depressing knowing we are not on a trajectory to keep our ecosystem in a functional state, but these connections are also a reason for hope; good management in one place can prevent severe environmental degradation elsewhere. Every action counts.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/dec/20/risks-of-domino-effect-of-tipping-points-greater-than-thought-study-says
