1. Todd Sack, M.D., is a member of the state and national boards of Physicians for Social Responsibility and sends these observations on his experiences as a speaker on climate.

"I haven't been seriously assailed yet but my approach is:

"1. Be completely credible before reaching the Q & A time.

"2. Carefully refute the common denier lines before reaching the Q & A.

"3. In response to a battery of preposterous questions, begin by telling the audience that the questions & approach are ridiculous, & choose 1 only to refute carefully, then move on to the next question.

"4. Finally, know your moderator and be able to appeal to that person to restore order if needed, for the sake of the others in the audience."

2. In 1959, at a ceremony to mark the 100th anniversary of the US oil industry, Edward Teller warned accurately of the dangers posed by CO2 accumulating in the atmosphere. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/jan/01/on-its-hundredth-birthday-in-1959-edward-teller-warned-the-oil-industry-about-global-warming

3. 2017 was the hottest year without an El Niño, and the second hottest year with or without. In the US we felt the effects in several ways, including fifteen billion-dollar weather disasters. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/jan/02/2017-was-the-hottest-year-on-record-without-an-el-nino-thanks-to-global-warming

4. As the climate changes, wine makers will be forced to experiment with new varieties, and the taste of the old varieties in a given region will be altered, so that we all will be led to pay more attention to liberated tasting and less to labels and past experience. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/01/180102114149.htm

It is a good idea to buy local wines, just for the lower carbon footprint if for no other reason. Wine drinkers in the SE US might try St. Augustine's San Sebastian Winery's Castillo Red for something competitive with a good Burgundy. They have a bottle return program.

5. A quarter of the earth would become seriously arid as we reach 2C of warming, according to a new international study published in Nature Climate Change. (We could reach 2C by mid-century.) Limiting warming to 1.5C would spare two-thirds of those regions. https://www.theguardian.com/science/2018/jan/02/keep-global-warming-under-15c-or-quarter-of-planet-could-become-arid

6. The Chinese government has banned the production of over 500 car models because they produce excessive emissions. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/02/climate/china-cars-pollution.html?utm_source=Daily+Climate&utm_campaign=aa105ad158-RSS_EMAIL_CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_9c8bdfd977-aa105ad158-99360421&_r=0

7. Destabilization of Arctic circulation patterns lie behind the recent frigid and stormy weather in the Eastern US. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/01/02/in-climate-up-the-down-escalator/ ?
