1. The editor of the Storm Lake, Iowa, Times describes the changing farming conditions as the climate changes. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/19/politicians-say-nothing-but-us-farmers-are-increasingly-terrified-by-it-climate-change

Farmers around here are itching to go after that amber wave of soya beans, but there was that 5in rain a couple of weeks ago and then a 7in rain, and it drives even the retired guys batty.

2. Researchers at a group of US universities have developed a heat exchange material which should make concentrating solar power with heat storage cheaper than solar with batteries. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/10/19/new-materials-could-make-concentrated-solar-power-cheaper-than-battery-storage/

Researchers have developed new materials to use in ultra high temperature concentrating solar power systems. High temperatures mean more electricity from the same amount of sunlight, making CSP price competitive with batteries for making electricity from sunlight.

3. Rewilding can be as simple as adding a hedgerow to a field. Such diversification of working land could play a big role in preserving species. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/10/181018151103.htm

Diversifying working lands -- including farmland, rangeland and forests -- may be key to preserving biodiversity in the face of climate change, says a new review article. These changes could ...

4. As of Oct. 24, five days before the Children’s Trust suit in Oregon was scheduled to go on trial, the Supreme Court has put the suit on hold with an administrative stay. The country is thus spared testimony that the US government has failed to protect the 21 young plaintiffs (and the rest of us) against the degradation of our environment by the burning of fossil fuels. https://www.ecowatch.com/youth-climate-lawsuit-supreme-court-2614235440.html?utm_source=EcoWatch+List&utm_campaign=54ea9e8c6c-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_49c7d43dc9-54ea9e8c6c-85965093

The Supreme Court put a landmark climate case on pause Friday while it considers a last-ditch attempt by the Trump administration to stop it.

5. WEDEW is a system which produces biochar in a shipping container, using the heated air to yield enough water to satisfy the daily needs of 100 people. The biochar can be buried, where it will sequester carbon and render soil more fertile. Where feedstock for pyrolysis is not available, the water maker can run on solar power with batteries. https://www.fastcompany.com/90253718/a-device-that-can-pull-drinking-water-from-the-air-just-won-the-latest-x-prize

The winner of the Water Abundance XPrize creates enough water for 100 people every day by making an artificial cloud inside a shipping container.

6. Insurance companies have largely ignored climate change because their year-to-year risk horizon led them to feel that they could adjust to such a gradual process. More and more companies, however, are coming to see that climate disasters can come suddenly, and that climate change can be nonlinear. The reinsurance companies (who insure insurance companies) have recognized climate risks for decades; now the insurance industry in general is becoming an interested audience for climate scientists. https://theconversation.com/rising-insurance-costs-may-convince-americans-that-climate-change-risks-are-real-105192?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2022%202018%20-%201142410298&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2022%202018%20-%201142410298+Version+A+CID_ab3a5c1abcec6b2e06cb9f8ee33f2214&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=Rising%20insurance%20costs%20may%20convince%20Americans%20that%20climate%20change%20risks%20are%20real

Convincing people to see and appreciate the threats posed by climate change is one of the great challenges of our day. Insurers may be able to succeed where scientists and educators have failed.

7. World Climate, a game available online, has been played by over 46,000 people around the world. It involves role playing as national representatives attempting to work out effective agreements to climate action. Over 80% of those who have played the game report it increased their willingness to work against climate change. The less people knew about climate and the less they were inclined to action, the bigger the effect. https://theconversation.com/how-a-game-can-move-people-from-climate-apathy-to-action-103822?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2022%202018%20-%201142410298&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20October%2022%202018%20-%201142410298+Version+A+CID_ab3a5c1abcec6b2e06cb9f8ee33f2214&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=How%20a%20game%20can%20move%20people%20from%20climate%20apathy%20to%20action
