1. Florida’s Department of Environmental Protection has issued a guidebook for coastal areas planning adaptation to sea level rise. This thoughtful guide should be of use to coastal communities, though they will need to attend to ground water levels as guides for drainage, water supply, and power risks not mentioned in the plan. St. Augustine’s Adaptation Plan of May 2017 is printed towards the end of the document. “Many residents seem not to know what’s coming.” (Page 97) https://floridadep.gov/fco/florida-resilient-coastlines-program/documents/adaptation-planning-guidebook

2. An Australian study shows that emissions reductions targets will lower and not drive up power bills, even if the reductions are steep. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2018/sep/18/steep-emissions-reductions-targets-wont-drive-up-power-bills-modelling-shows

3. When people are told about climate change they react as they do to other traumas—with anger, fear, and dissociation. This eight-minute video from Yale describes how to deal with an audience going through such reactions. Acknowledge the emotions with a discussion, share your own reaction, and show how we are not helpless and the situation not hopeless. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/09/18/new-video-textbook-trauma-the-emotional-cost-of-climate-change/

4. Oxygen levels are dropping dangerously in Canada’s Gulf of St. Lawrence. An analysis shows that the cause is shifts in the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2018/09/180917111600.htm

Rapid deoxygenation in the Gulf of the St. Lawrence is caused by shifts in two of the ocean's most powerful currents: the Gulf Stream and the Labrador Current. A detailed model shows that large-scale climate change is causing oxygen to drop in the deeper parts of this biologically rich waterway.

6. Wetlands are some of the world's most undervalued weapons against climate change. They store huge quantities of carbon – but without better protection, many could soon be drained or paved over.
