1. A new study matching models and climate measurements confirms estimates that we need vigorous emissions control measures to avoid losing our chance to hold warming under 2C. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2018/sep/24/new-study-reconciles-a-dispute-about-how-fast-global-warming-will-happen

2. By the end of the century climate change is expected to displace 13 million people in the US. Worldwide, as many as 300 million climate refugees are expected by midcentury. We ought to do some planning. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/sep/24/americas-era-of-climate-mass-migration-is-here

The figures seem to be based on an expectation of six feet of sea level rise by 2100. James Hansen and others estimate that destabilized polar ice sheets will lead us to that level sooner.

3. Where in the US should displaced people settle? One recommendation is to look above the 42nd parallel, close to water but not to likely flooding. How about Cincinnati? Or Duluth? 4. The wealthy are most able to relocate to cooler and more secure areas, where they drive up home prices and rental fees, stressing the community resources in their new city. “The people marginalized already in society will bear the brunt of this.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/sep/25/climate-gentrification-phoenix-flagstaff-miami-rich-poor

5. When the earth was about a degree warmer than it is now, 125,000 years ago, three glaciers in the East Antarctic appear to have melted. They hold about ten feet of sea level rise and are grounded below sea level. https://www.washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2018/09/20/antarctica-warming-could-fuel-disastrous-sea-level-rise-study-finds/?utm_term=.aa4597487e02

6. Thermokarst lakes in the Arctic are releasing more methane than expected because they are thawing progressive layers of permafrost in their beds in a process called abrupt thawing. A second type of thermokarst lake, described in the Washington Post article, adds the release of old reservoirs of methane which can be many times as large as from abrupt thawing alone. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/09/25/nasa-new-pathway-for-methane-emissions-from-arctic-lakes/
