1. The U of Maryland has posted an interactive map of what the climate in a fairly long list of US cities will be like in 2080. Cities are paired with others, generally hundreds of miles to the south, which have a similar climate now. Thanks to Ed Brock for the link. https://fitzlab.shinyapps.io/cityapp/

Here’s Seth Borenstein’s story on the research behind the map. https://apnews.com/490bdd76a4114b178065b8a0e55d0ec7

2. An ultrathin sheet of carbon nitride can remove almost all biological contaminants from water using only sunlight. As water supply becomes a greater problem this new product could become correspondingly important. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/water-purification-light-graphitic-carbon-nitride?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=latest-newsletter-v2

3. Carbon deposits in the deep ocean are capped by hydrates which destabilize as the temperature increases. Releases from these deposits may have ended the last ice age 17,000 years ago. (These deep-sea deposits are distinct from the methane hydrates on the continental shelf around the Arctic.) https://phys.org/news/2019-02-undersea-gases-superheat-planet.html

4. Wall Street is said to be willing to fund the Green New Deal but needs clarity from congress. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2019-02-14/wall-street-is-more-than-willing-to-fund-the-green-new-deal

5. Volkswagen will launch a fleet of 100 MOIA electric shuttle vehicles offering ridesharing services in Hamburg in the next two months. The shuttles will eventually be driverless and are expected to make it much easier to do without a car in urban areas. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/14/vws-moia-electric-shuttle-service-goes-live-in-2-months/

6. The mayor of Los Angeles has cancelled plans for three new natural gas power plants. “It’s the right thing to do for our health. It’s the right thing to do for our Earth. It’s the right thing to do for our economy,” Garcetti said. “And now is the time to start the beginning of the end of natural gas. This is the Green New Deal, not in concept, not in the future, but now.” https://cleantechnica.com/2019/02/14/mayor-of-los-angeles-credits-green-new-deal-for-decision-to-cancel-3-gas-fired-generating-stations/
