1. Equipment for thinking about the costs of climate change include four basic concepts: permanent vs. transitory and remunerative costs; the social cost of carbon; impacts on economic equality; and the potential for adaptation. https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/17/upshot/how-to-think-about-the-costs-of-climate-change.html?emc=edit_th_190120&nl=todaysheadlines&nlid=436283740120

Many of the big economic questions in coming decades will come down to just how extreme the weather will be, and how to value the future versus the present.

2. In deciding on where to focus resources in coping with climate change, we need to recognize that there are some impacts which are simple to deal with, others which are probably unavoidable, and a third group which might be countered with practical strategies. We would need to decide how much we valued the things at risk and what assets we could muster for a given action. Efforts toward beach renourishment, for example, might well be compared with the establishment of a kelp permaculture program in such a framework. https://theconversation.com/we-cant-save-everything-from-climate-change-heres-how-to-make-choices-108141?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20January%2023%202019%20-%201218111187&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20January%2023%202019%20-%201218111187+Version+B+CID_939ac7454b46d294cbe2d41ec98bdbf7&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=We%20cant%20save%20everything%20from%20climate%20change%20%20heres%20how%20to%20make%20choices

3. DecoTech solar systems, sold through roofers, replace part of the roof tiles with standard solar panels. They are meant to be applied when reroofing is necessary; the installation process renders the roof watertight, and costs about as much as stand-alone solar. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/19/solar-shingles-the-focus-of-new-gaf-energy-unit/

4. The rate of ice loss in Greenland has increased fourfold since 2003, more than we had thought. The Greenland ice sheets, like those of the West Antarctic, may have reached a tipping point beyond which their melting is inevitable. https://phys.org/news/2019-01-greenland-ice-faster.html

6. The Sunrise Movement of mostly college-age people has been a major force behind the call for a green new deal. The movement’s values and ideas are generally in opposition to neoliberalism. https://cleantechnica.com/2019/01/22/principles-of-the-sunrise-movement-antidotes-to-neoliberalism/ I consider that effective climate action will generally point toward the establishment of a sustainable society and will find it necessary to oppose neoliberal principles to get that done. A sense that this is true lies behind conservative opposition to recognizing climate change and thus the need for action; it accompanies the greed for short-term profits from fossil fuels. Naomi Klein, George Monbiot, and others have made the point for years.

The term “neoliberalism” isn’t new. It was coined in 1938 at a meeting in which social democracy was framed as analogous to a collectivism like Nazism and communism. But neoliberalism today ...
