1. Batteries have gotten cheaper even faster than solar or wind power. They now compete, unsubsidized, with (subsidized) fossil fuel peaking plants to fill in weak periods in the power grid. https://about.bnef.com/blog/battery-powers-latest-plunge-costs-threatens-coal-gas/

2. The Republican Party is acting as an arm of the fossil fuel industry. Not all its opposition will be as clownish as the recent display in the senate. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2019/mar/27/climate-change-green-new-deal-republicans

Watch for a lot of talk about the necessity of waiting for nuclear power and the inevitability of the continued use of natural gas, along with attempts to misrepresent renewable energy as expensive, dirty, difficult to deploy, and elitist. We shall probably continue to hear about the promise of carbon capture from fossil fuel exhaust streams and the benefits of solar radiation blocking. These fossil fuel talking points are all worth countering whenever they appear. They are all ways to avoid ceasing the use of fossil fuels.

4. Mangroves are spreading to the north along Florida’s coasts as temperatures climb. Fishable saltwater marshes become protected mangrove swamps. They are up to four times as efficient as a rainforest in sequestering carbon and provide protection against erosion and storm surge. https://news.wjct.org/post/protectors-coast-what-mangroves-northward-march-means-northeast-florida

5. California spent $1.4 billion last year which it received from its cap-and-trade program. That went to an array of programs with a net effect as if eight million internal combustion engine cars were taken off the road. Not only does cap-and-trade inhibit emissions by making them more costly, it can be used to speed the energy transition. https://grist.org/article/so-what-did-california-do-with-that-1-4-billion-in-cap-and-trade-money/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

6. The East Antarctic holds over 80% of the planet’s ice. It already accounts for 20% of the continent’s melt. Studies now underway should help clarify the East’s contribution to coming sea level rise. The article is valuable for its description of the complexities involved in predicting what we can look for from the East; we already know the West Antarctic is unstable. https://e360.yale.edu/features/polar-warning-even-antarctica-coldest-region-is-starting-to-melt

East Antarctica is the coldest spot on earth, long thought to be untouched by warming. But now the glaciers and ice shelves in this frigid region are showing signs of melting, a development that portends dramatic rises in sea levels this century and beyond.

8. George Monbiot’s book Out of the Wreckage (2017) concerns how our sense of community has been compromised by neoliberal social engineering and how we might reconstruct it. The book helped me understand the centrality of social programs to climate action in the Green New Deal. https://books.google.com/books/about/Out_of_the_Wreckage.html?id=viYGDQAAQBAJ&printsec=frontcover&source=kp_read_button#v=onepage&q&f=false

A thrilling new route to a better societyA toxic ideology of extreme competition and individualism has come to dominate our world. It misrepresents human nature, destroying hope and common purpose. Only a positive vision can replace it, a new story that re-engages people in politics and lights a path to a better future.George Monbiot shows how new findings in psychology, neuroscience and evolutionary biology cast human nature in a radically different light: as the supreme altruists and cooperators. He shows how we can build on these findings to create a new politics: a “politics of belonging.” Both democracy and economic life can be radically reorganized from the bottom up, enabling us to take back control and overthrow the forces that have thwarted our ambitions for a better society.Urgent and passionate, Out of the Wreckage provides the hope and clarity required to change the world.
