1. A proposed Global Deal for Nature would set various degrees of protection for 30% of the earth’s surface by 2030 and put further restrictions on another 20%. The effect would be to sequester enough carbon to make it more possible to keep warming to 1.5C, and to preserve biodiversity, avoiding some severe and even permanent damage to ecosystems. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/19042019/global-deal-nature-climate-change-wildlife-biodiversity-targets-tundra-forest-soil-carbon-sequestration-study

2. A UN report to be released Monday warns that current threats to biodiversity endanger our supply of food and water. Up to a million species are facing extinction. “We should be hopeful that we have a window of opportunity to do something about it over these two years.” A world conference at the end of 2020 will set new biodiversity goals. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2019/may/03/climate-crisis-is-about-to-put-humanity-at-risk-un-scientists-warn

4. Inslee’s proposed climate program is the first part of a comprehensive plan which includes ending subsidies for fossil fuels, restoring our role in the Paris accord, and attacking such peripheral but potent greenhouse gasses as the hydrofluorocarbons. https://grist.org/article/a-tale-of-two-washingtons-how-jay-inslee-aims-to-take-his-climate-plan-nationwide/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

If you notice Inslee being a little testy on the topic of the Green New Deal, it is because his proposal in its specificity goes far beyond the general goals of the Green New Deal while it serves them. Inslee is anxious that his proposal not be equated to the Green New Deal.

5. The PBS series Sinking Cities ran last fall. In one-hour installments it profiled the flooding faced by New York, London, Tokyo, and Miami. The most at-risk is Miami. New York wins the prize for the most outrageous protection project, a twenty-foot wall called The Big U around the southern part of Manhattan.
