1. New Jersey is the first state to require that builders take climate, including sea level rise, into account to gain state approval for building projects. The state’s Department of Environmental Protection is scheduled to develop new rules by 2022. The state is expecting as much as a foot of sea level rise by 2030. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/27/nyregion/climate-change-nj-environmental-rules.html

The state’s new Energy Master Plan includes the electrification of buildings and the reduction of natural gas usage, and calls for new building codes requiring zero carbon construction. The Master Plan is intended to guide the development of the Department of Environmental Protection’s new rules. https://nj.gov/emp/energy/

2. Direct measurement of water temperature at the grounding line of Thwaites Glacier in the West Antarctic found it melting in warm water. The glacier is less stable than expected, and more likely to destabilize in the coming decades. https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/temperatures-at-a-florida-size-glacier-in-antarctica-alarm-scientists/ar-BBZrEGw?ocid=spartandhp

The BBC story on Thwaites is full of pictures and info. https://www.bbc.com/news/science-environment-51097309

3. The UK’s Met Office predicts that we will have exceeded 1.5C of heating by 2024. https://www.msn.com/en-us/weather/topstories/record-heat-forecast-for-coming-years/ar-BBZtDwj?ocid=spartandhp

4. An international study finds that we would be about .2-.25C hotter but for the new vegetation fertilized by the increasing CO2. https://www.bu.edu/articles/2020/plants-are-slowing-global-warming/

5. Sea level rise could interfere with Miami as the venue for coming super bowls. Thanks to Lad Hawkins for the story. https://www.marketwatch.com/story/climate-change-poses-threat-to-future-super-bowls-in-miami-2020-01-31
