1. The largest Passivhaus in North America is a new 154-unit low-income apartment house in New York, proving that low carbon emissions housing is not for the wealthy alone. That’s not really news, but it runs counter to a common belief. https://cleantechnica.com/2020/01/01/the-largest-passive-house-in-north-america-154-low-income-housing-units-46-for-formerly-homeless/?utm_source=CleanTechnica+News&utm_campaign=854eedea1a-Daily+Email+CAMPAIGN&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_b9b83ee7eb-854eedea1a-331994013

2. Australian novelist Richard Flanagan describes Australia’s plight as it faces climate catastrophe while led by a coal-funded political hack supported by a Murdoch-dominated news industry. (Here, Fox News just had its most dominant year.) https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/03/opinion/australia-fires-climate-change.html

3. Austria is now led by a coalition between the Greens and conservative nationalists. The result is a program which features both banning head-scarves for Muslim girls and a target of carbon neutrality by 2040. https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/02/world/europe/austria-kurz-greens-coalition-government.html

4. Charleston, SC, had at least minor tidal flooding on 89 days last year. The previous record was 58 in 2015. https://www.postandcourier.com/news/charleston-and-the-south-carolina-coast-flooded-record-times-in/article_7c18ee5e-2e3b-11ea-8784-23ddbc8d4e0c.html

5. Charleston is not making general plans to relocate. One Key Largo neighborhood, flooded for the last ninety days, wants their roads elevated. Jacksonville, FL, is still developing on its flood plains. We have an obstinate grasp on an evaporating world. As we realize we will have to relocate, we are also beginning to face the enormous problem of how to go about it. We are not able to simply buy out homes at anything like what people think they are worth. https://www.floridatoday.com/story/opinion/2019/12/27/buyouts-best-solution-rising-sea-level-opinion/2756175001/

6. Saul Griffith’s 12-minute video on Shooting for the Moon suggests what we could do now that we are out of time for most of the things we have talked about doing. https://climatecrocks.com/2020/01/04/saul-griffith-on-shooting-for-the-moon/
