1. An article in Nature Communications assesses the potential for sequestering carbon in soil. The leading possibilities are from reforestation and biochar. https://www.carbonbrief.org/restoring-soils-could-remove-up-to-5-5bn-tonnes-of-greenhouse-gases-every-year?utm_campaign=Carbon%20Brief%20Daily%20Briefing&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter

2. “The world’s largest investment banks have funneled more than $2.66 trillion into fossil fuels since the Paris agreement.” J. P. Morgan, source of an analysis warning that the climate crisis threatens to end our species, has been the heaviest investor, followed by Wells Fargo, Citi Bank, and the Bank of America. Investment in fossil fuel extraction, especially fracking, has surged 40% in the past year. The study was done by a group of environmental organizations, including the Sierra Club. Several banks contacted for comment protested that they were committed to climate action. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/mar/18/global-banks-climate-crisis-finance-fossil-fuels

3. The new Grace Follow-On satellite system revealed that Greenland lost 600bn tons of ice in two months last summer, enough to raise the sea level 2 mm by itself, and over two times the average annual loss recently. https://phys.org/news/2020-03-greenland-ice-unprecedented-antarctica-mass.html

4. Samsung says that it has a solid-state battery under development which would double the range of electric vehicles under current batteries. Samsung did not say when the battery would become available. Other manufacturers also have solid-state batteries under development. https://www.greencarreports.com/news/1127502_samsung-solid-state-battery-tech-under-development-doubles-energy-density

5. In 2017 Project Drawdown identified and ranked solutions to the climate crisis. Jonathan Foley, Executive Director of the project, discusses a revision which brings the list up to date. A main change is that some solutions have become cheaper with the drop in price of renewables. The corona virus, disastrous as it is, gives us a chance to make some constructive social changes. https://grist.org/climate/here-are-the-top-ways-the-world-could-take-on-climate-change-in-2020/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

6. The locust crisis in East Africa and surrounding area, the worst in decades, has now reached 10 countries and endangers the food security of 25 million people. Climate changes have facilitated the outbreak. Early intervention can limit the damage in future years. https://www.carbonbrief.org/qa-are-the-2019-20-locust-swarms-linked-to-climate-change?utm_campaign=Carbon%20Brief%20Daily%20Briefing&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter

7. Groundwater flowing over frozen permafrost to the ocean is an unexpected source of carbon and nitrogen in the Arctic. https://phys.org/news/2020-03-hidden-source-carbon-arctic-coast.html
