1. The odds of facing a major hurricane are increasing, especially in the Atlantic. “The study finds a global increase of about 8 percent per decade of the likelihood that a given tropical cyclone will become a Category 3 or greater storm.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/05/18/hurricanes-stronger-climate-change/?itid=hp_national1-8-12_hurricanes-537pm%3Ahomepage%2Fstory-ans

2. Carbon emissions are down because we are doing less travelling as we hide from the coronavirus and because the world’s economies have slowed. Whether the drop is significant depends on the policies we pursue as we become active again. We need to emerge greener than we were or we will remain the same ugly caterpillar which cocooned. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2020/may/19/steep-fall-emissions-during-coronavirus-no-cause-for-celebration

3. France and Germany have proposed a plan for a green European Union recovery from the virus. https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-eu-recovery-climate/germany-france-throw-weight-behind-eus-green-recovery-plan-idUKKBN22V1ZJ?utm_campaign=Carbon%20Brief%20Daily%20Briefing&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter

5. California’s largest utility, Pacific Gas and Electric, has filed for approval of 1.7GWh of lithium battery energy storage as part of a project to be activated by August 2021. Most notably, the request includes no gas. The utility may need a name change. https://reneweconomy.com.au/pge-seeks-approval-for-1-7gwh-of-new-battery-storage-for-california-grid-28697/

6. A 690MW solar project approved for construction near Las Vegs will be the biggest US solar project yet. The plan includes a 380MW battery power storage system. https://www.renewableenergyworld.com/2020/05/15/us-interior-department-approves-plan-for-the-largest-solar-project-in-u-s-history/?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=2020-05-20&utm_source=rew_weekly_newsletter
