1. Carbon emissions continue to increase. A study blames road transport, increased meat consumption, and a global trend toward larger houses. Governments should phase out fossil fuels for renewable energy, make carbon costly, and adopt Wellbeing Economy Alliance principles. Producers should set emissions reduction targets, adopt the principles of circular economy, and increase energy and material efficiency. Individuals should switch to public transportation or ride-sharing, eat less meat and adopt an 80%+ plant-based diet, and use renewable energy, including their own solar power if necessary. https://phys.org/news/2021-06-reveals-alarming-greenhouse-gas.html

2. Developers shift control of their developments to home owners associations or condo boards as soon as they have taken their profit. 20% of US homeowners live in property governed by such authorities, which are staffed with volunteers untrained and unready to deal with the threats of climate change. “In effect, condo and HOA developments are a huge experiment in privatization of local government functions, and sometimes the offloading of government responsibilities goes too far.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/surfside-condo-climate-change-cost/2021/07/01/b6699a98-da76-11eb-9bbb-37c30dcf9363_story.html

3. The heat dome which is causing the heat wave in the NW and Canada is not peculiar to the region. No area is safe from such a threat. “This is a warning in two senses. We have to get emissions down to zero fast to cut off the new extreme heatwaves, and we have to adapt to the new climate conditions we are creating.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2021/jul/01/nowhere-is-safe-say-scientists-as-extreme-heat-causes-chaos-in-us-and-canada

4. An ExxonMobil lobbyist was tricked into revealing how the corporation works to subvert climate legislation and to protect its market for forever chemicals. Senator Manchin was said to be in weekly conversation with the lobbyist. https://grist.org/accountability/how-exxon-sabotages-climate-legislation-lobbyist/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

5. There is no moderate position on the climate crisis. Any adequate set of actions will require radical change, in the sense of going for the roots of the problem. The implications for US politics are on display in the current stalemate regarding the infrastructure initiative. https://www.volts.wtf/p/there-is-no-moderate-position-on

6. Water can be cleaned with only itself, electricity, and a catalyst to produce hydrogen peroxide. The process is millions of times more effective than current methods and promises to alleviate drinking water shortages. https://phys.org/news/2021-07-instant-method-millions-commercial-approach.html?utm_source=nwletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-nwletter
