1. The environmental virtues of plant-based milks are illustrated in a series of graphs comparing them to dairy milk. https://climatecrocks.com/2022/12/19/graph-of-the-day-impacts-of-dairy-vs-veggie-milk/

2. Antonio Guterres, UN secretary general, announced a climate ambition summit for September. The price of admission is a “serious new climate action which will move the needle forward.” He said that the 1.5C goal “is gasping for breath.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/19/climate-goal-15c-gasping-breath-un-head-antonio-guterres

3. The US participated in COP 15, developing goals which the US has supported in a treaty which has no chance of US passage because of Republican opposition in the senate. There, 67 votes are required to ratify a treaty. One way for the US to support the global effort without ratifying the treaty would be to adopt a National Biodiversity Strategy. https://www.sierraclub.org/sierra/united-states-not-party-global-treaty-protect-wildlife?&suppress=true&utm_source=insider&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=newsletter

4. The US failure to join the Convention on Biological Diversity goes back to the elder George Bush’s presidency, when Republican opposition prevented US participation in a treaty we took a leading role in drafting. That tradition continues with the biodiversity treaty, as with others having to do with human rights, the environment, and international cooperation. Republican senators appear to like to keep options open (and unexamined). https://www.vox.com/22434172/us-cbd-treaty-biological-diversity-nature-conservation

5. The world’s largest and most powerful wind turbine is being assembled in Denmark. Its wingspan is 774 feet, and it could power 20,000 European homes on its own. The design has been selected for three offshore projects on the US East Coast. https://electrek.co/2022/12/22/worlds-most-powerful-wind-turbine-vestas/

6. After some skirmishing, the US postal service is converting entirely to electric trucks as of 2026. https://www.treehugger.com/us-postal-service-going-all-electric-after-all-6951472?hid=32e98be45af0c3a04424ac172ca1406ef3120015&did=7837862-20221223&utm_source=treehugger&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=treehugger-daily_newsletter&utm_content=122322&lctg=32e98be45af0c3a04424ac172ca1406ef3120015
