1. Bill McKibben looks at the resistance to the energy transition, and finds sources personal, local, regional, and nationally organized. The momentum for the transition is irresistible but time is short. https://www.newyorker.com/news/daily-comment/from-climate-exhortation-to-climate-execution?utm_source=nl&utm_brand=tny&utm_mailing=TNY_Daily_122722&utm_campaign=aud-dev&utm_medium=email&utm_term=tny_daily_digest&bxid=5be9cafe24c17c6adf39e724&cndid=18164692&hasha=8c547d53af6ff6fc7d49cb8612c07102&hashb=e0cd75d11efd01a0b77ab9e6aebc9acfab41dac0&hashc=fe17c36079354ec46082a9a7c8fc19c8d3b811c991613e650512e53c322cb659&esrc=CDS_OP&mbid=CRMNYR062419

2. The ride is rough, but the cart appears to be heading downhill, away from fossil fuels, and is picking up speed. Among other pleasures in the selections, the Electric Viking profiles the year’s direction in EU energy production in a 12-minute video. https://climatecrocks.com/2022/12/28/2022-the-year-the-transition-kicked-into-gear/

3. CNBC supplies a handy summary of US power production, past, present, and planned. It observes that cultural inertia is a large factor in slowing the energy transition. https://www.cnbc.com/2022/12/29/why-isnt-the-us-electrical-grid-run-on-100percent-renewable-energy-yet.html

4. Reviews of Avatar 2: The Way of Water range from admiration to dismissal. Philosopher Rupert Read admires its earth ethic. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/dec/21/avatar-2-the-way-of-water-rethink-relationship-planet-earth

5. The FL legislature has passed reforms meant to moderate insurers’ litigation costs. Property insurance is still going to increase as the climate crisis takes hold. Few other states are immune to the rising insurance costs. https://climatecrocks.com/2022/12/30/in-florida-insurers-on-edge-due-to-climate-disasters-even-with-reforms/ One solution to the problem would be to build more robust homes in more secure locations. Tiny houses on wheels may be vulnerable to nasty weather, but small houses on firm foundations need not be. They may even require less insurance.

6. A look at the year’s climate events and actions in the US allows us to appreciate what was accomplished in spite of greed and ignorance (and some things, such as growth in commercial gas, accomplished by representatives of those two). Increasingly, we had to act despite weather disasters and international disruptions. Challenges lie ahead. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/dec/30/key-us-climate-emergency-moments-2022

7. Finally, we took at least six actions in 2022 which drew us toward zero emissions and a healthier world. https://phys.org/news/2022-12-climate-breakthroughs-net.html
