1. George Monbiot attests to the truths conveyed in Don’t Look Up about how the media treats the climate crisis. It’s enough to make you weep. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jan/04/dont-look-up-life-of-campaigning

2. Bill McKibben continues the discussion of the media’s disappointing treatment of the climate crisis. https://billmckibben.substack.com/p/just-a-little-too-slow?utm_source=substack&utm_medium=email&utm_content=share&token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjo4NTEzNDA2LCJwb3N0X2lkIjo0NjYzNTY0NSwiXyI6IkRaNnlzIiwiaWF0IjoxNjQxMzk2MzYxLCJleHAiOjE2NDEzOTk5NjEsImlzcyI6InB1Yi00MzgxNDYiLCJzdWIiOiJwb3N0LXJlYWN0aW9uIn0.4H_UWRI63SWi0GYB9gxV-bA3RVmz6ceI1mo3ebc98D4

3. Scientists from the U of East Anglia are heading to the Antarctic as part of a joint UK-US five-year mission to explore the stability of Thwaites Glacier, which is the size of Florida and threatening to initiate a rise in sea level. Among other tools, they will send Boaty McBoatface under the Thwaites ice shelf, where no robot sub has gone before. https://www.businessweekly.co.uk/news/academia-research/uea-scientists-guide-mission-chart-antarctic-sea-level-rise

4. About 30% of the work hours we now lose to excessive heat could be recaptured if we adjusted our work schedules to use the cooler hours of the day and night. It’s a temporary patch, but at least it begins to adjust to changing conditions. https://www.anthropocenemagazine.org/2022/01/in-face-of-climate-change-rethink-regular-work-hours/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=in-face-of-climate-change-rethink-regular-work-hours

5. The fossil fuel industry has worked industriously to promote the idea that commercial gas development is a good and even necessary way to move from coal to renewables. In fact, that is a filthy and expensive mistake. Growing recognition of how cheap renewables are has already led to the cancellation of half the new gas plants planned to open in the US in the next two years. Now to cancel the other half and replace the operating ones. That would save money and create jobs even as it increased our chances of having a future. https://cleantechnica.com/2022/01/05/reality-check-fossil-gas-no-longer-needed-as-bridge-to-clean-energy-future/

6. More than 40% of Americans lived in counties hit by a climate disaster next year. 80% experienced a heat wave. Adaptation is necessary, but it is not our only option. We survivors need to demand that the Republicans and their friends in the senate and the statehouses cease softening us up to accept a dictator and get out of the way of climate action. https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2022/01/05/climate-disasters-2021-fires/
