1. John Kerry warns that the longer the war goes on in Ukraine the lower our chances of keeping heating to 1.5C. The war acts as a distraction from the energy transition, and complicates it for many countries. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/10/john-kerry-warns-long-ukraine-war-threaten-climate-efforts

2. Coastal geologist Rob Young of Western Carolina U gave a talk in Pensacola on dealing with sea level rise. He suggests seven guidelines for public policy. https://www.pnj.com/story/news/civiccon/2022/05/10/rob-young-discusses-climate-change-civiccon-pensacola/9707956002/

3. “Oil and gas majors are planning scores of vast projects that threaten to shatter the 1.5C climate goal. If governments do not act, these firms will continue to cash in as the world burns.” We must prevent the corporations from carrying out their plans. Thanks to Ed Brock for the link. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/ng-interactive/2022/may/11/fossil-fuel-carbon-bombs-climate-breakdown-oil-gas

4. The fracking boom underway in the US is large enough to plague people locally and to further disrupt global climate systems. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/may/11/us-fracking-climate-fossil-fuel-gases?utm_campaign=Daily%20Briefing&utm_content=20220512&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20newsletter

5. As sea levels rise coastal areas will be subjected to increasing salination of the water and the soil. Inland, rising evaporation rates and increasing drought will heighten the concentration of ground salt. Salination poses a threat to food supplies and could motivate migration. Some sources, such as salt spread to prevent roads icing in the winter, could be shut off immediately. https://e360.yale.edu/features/salt-scourge-the-dual-threat-of-warming-and-rising-salinity

6. Forests supply at least half of the drinking water for 85 million people in the US. Wildfires can compromise that supply, and so can the decisions of private forest owners to develop their land. https://phys.org/news/2022-05-forests-million-people.html
