1. Problems with the sodium-metal batteries are solved by using nanomaterials made from seaweed. More efficient, safer, more sustainable, and cheaper batteries are expected for uses large and small. https://cleantechnica.com/2022/10/07/seaweed-based-battery-powers-confidence-in-sustainable-energy-storage/

2. The European Commission is moving to end a secret corporate panel system established by a treaty which allows EU fossil fuel companies whose profit expectations are diminished by a country’s policy changes to sue that country for damages. The corporate courts make it difficult for countries to transition from fossil fuels. The EU hopes that other governments will join their decision to end such an outrageous practice. Poland and Italy are simply withdrawing from the energy charter treaty. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/08/european-commission-aims-to-end-secret-system-protecting-fossil-fuel-holdings

3. Naomi Klein presents nine writers and activists with a paragraph each to describe their best idea of how to save the planet. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2022/oct/08/nine-great-ideas-save-planet-thomas-piketty-naomi-klein-bill-mckibben

4. To develop solar panels which were viable on a car’s surface Aptera had to solve a battery of problems. Their success is likely to lead to other vehicles supplying a significant part of their own power. https://cleantechnica.com/2022/10/10/why-apteras-vehicle-solar-panel-design-is-bigger-news-for-the-ev-industry-than-we-think/

5. The World Wildlife Fund reports that populations of monitored animals in the wild have dropped 69% in the last 50 years. Freshwater species and tropical regions showed the highest drop. The main drivers are agricultural disruption of habitats, exploitation, invasive species, pollution, climate change, and disease. https://www.france24.com/en/live-news/20221012-wildlife-populations-plunge-69-since-1970-wwf?utm_campaign=Carbon%20Brief%20Daily%20Briefing&utm_content=20221013&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20Daily

6. The US and Germany are leading a reform of international development bank management to facilitate climate finance, beginning with the World Bank, the largest. “The proposals aim to make the bank fit to address global challenges, including climate action and biodiversity conservation.” https://www.climatechangenews.com/2022/10/12/us-germany-world-bank-reform-climate-finance/?utm_campaign=Carbon%20Brief%20Daily%20Briefing&utm_content=20221013&utm_medium=email&utm_source=Revue%20Daily
