1. Using a new measuring method, Scripps’ Peter Bromirski has found that average wave heights at the CA coast have increased one foot since 1970, periods of exceptionally low heights have disappeared, and large swells of at least 13 feet are more common. Beach erosion and storm damage have gone up accordingly. https://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/california/california-waves-get-bigger-earth-warms/3286909/

2. 87% of US Democrats and 28% of Republicans think that climate change is a major threat. A third of Republicans do not consider it a threat at all. Almost ¾ of Republicans think that we should prioritize economic growth over climate actions. They apparently do not understand the economic impact of the climate crisis. (Perhaps this is an artificial idiocy generated by the right-wing press, led by Fox News, the Wall Street Journal, and most local tv news. Other democracies do not appear to be infected.) https://www.pbs.org/newshour/science/climate-change-is-hitting-close-to-home-for-nearly-2-out-of-3-americans-poll-finds

3. The first of a Yale video series on extreme weather deals with the growing strength of hurricanes and the increasing risk of flooding. 10 minutes. https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2023/08/how-bad-could-hurricanes-get-with-climate-change/

4. A few graphs illustrate the growth of renewables and the declining number of students interested in majoring in petroleum-engineering. https://climatecrocks.com/2023/08/06/graphs-of-the-week-energy-transition-accelerates/

5. The long-term effects of flooding in Pakistan include economic decline and persistent problems of public health, particularly of children’s health. Islamic Relief Worldwide surveyed the damage and asked that wealthier nations contribute to remedies. (They surely speak for many regions suffering and to suffer from a climate crisis brought on by wealthy nations.) https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2023/aug/05/a-year-on-the-devastating-long-term-effects-of-pakistans-floods-are-revealed
