1. When people are under climate stressors, they tend to become more cooperative as they deal with the problems. Drought seems to be an exception, particularly when regions have established ethnic or religious hostility. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41558-023-01732-2?utm_source=cbnewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=2023-07-25&utm_campaign=Daily+Briefing+25+07+2023

2. Australian climate scientists describe their reactions as they see climate predictions realized. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2023/jul/25/northern-hemisphere-heatwaves-europe-greece-italy-wildfires-extreme-weather-climate-experts

3. GM CEO Mary Barra has announced that the Bolt will rise again. They will go out of production this year (last orders will be taken beginning August 17). We are fond of our Bolt EUV, and I am glad to know it has descendants on the way. Less personally, we need dependable, fun, affordable EVs for the energy transition. More and more EVs fit that profile. Used ones, eligible for a $4,000 subsidy, are growing in numbers. For social (and thus for climate) justice I am glad to have a union-made one. https://insideevs.com/news/678595/next-gen-chevy-bolt-ultium-confirmed/

4. GM along with BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Stellantis are building an EV fast-charging network using Tesla’s standard North America Charging Standard. It will be located in major US metropolitan areas and highways, and powered by renewable energy. https://electrek.co/2023/07/26/auto-giants-unite-build-universal-network-clean-energy-fast-charger-north-america/

5. Researchers at the U of Copenhagen have used a new modelling procedure which indicates that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, part of the worldwide conveyer belt of currents, will collapse between 2025 and 2095. https://phys.org/news/2023-07-gloomy-climate-scientists-collapse-atlantic.html?utm_source=nwletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=daily-nwletter

6. Further consideration of the model and more detail on its implications are likely to appear. I plan to pass on illumination as it is offered. The Guardian explores some of the issues. “A collapse of Amoc would have disastrous consequences around the world, severely disrupting the rains that billions of people depend on for food in India, South America and west Africa. It would increase storms and drop temperatures in Europe, and lead to a rising sea level on the eastern coast of North America. It would also further endanger the Amazon rainforest and Antarctic ice sheets.”
“If emissions do start to fall, as intended by current climate policies, then the world would have more time to try to keep global temperature below the Amoc tipping point.” https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/25/gulf-stream-could-collapse-as-early-as-2025-study-suggests
