1. An average annual temperature rise of 1C is associated with a 6.3% or greater rise in domestic violence against women, according to a survey of three SE Asian countries published in JAMA Psychiatry. Studies in China, Africa, and Europe support the finding. Women in poor and rural areas are at particular risk. The findings should be added to other findings on the health effects of growing heat. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jun/28/climate-crisis-linked-to-rising-domestic-violence-in-south-asia-study-finds

2. China has set a goal of doubling its renewable energy capacity by 2030, producing a third of the country’s power. It is on track to achieve that by 2025. In the first quarter of this year they produced more solar power than the rest of the world’s nations combined. They still face the challenge of ending reliance on coal. https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/jun/29/china-wind-solar-power-global-renewable-energy-leader

3. The EU has increased their renewable energy goal to 42.5% by 2030. In 2021 Europe produced 22% of its energy renewably. https://www.reuters.com/sustainability/climate-energy/eu-renewable-energy-law-clears-first-vote-after-french-nuclear-assurances-2023-06-28/?utm_source=cbnewsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=2023-06-29&utm_campaign=Daily+Briefing+29+06+2023

4. Abundant fracked gas and a lot of hype has led to 41% of US power coming from methane. But renewables are cheaper and, as are finding, a lot more reliable. Renewables also will not eventually roast us. https://climatecrocks.com/2023/06/29/its-clear-gas-generation-has-big-reliability-problem/

5. Canada has released a national climate adaptation strategy to run in parallel to its mitigation efforts. The plan outlines a series of goals, including “improving health outcomes, protecting nature and biodiversity and building more resilient infrastructure.” Most of the adaptation actions are expected to be planned and to take place at the local level. https://www.aljazeera.com/news/2023/6/27/canada-launches-first-ever-climate-adaption-strategy

6. A research team has found that the Inflation Reduction Act has resulted in a drop of greenhouse gas emissions only a year after it was enacted. Their models show a drop of 43-48% from 2005 levels by 2035. The largest drops come from changes in electricity creation. https://phys.org/news/2023-06-passage-inflation-reduction-lowering-greenhouse.html
