1.Mustafa Suleyman, the CEO of Microsoft AI, makes a case for a humanist superintelligence which could be directed toward such problems as the climate crisis. https://www.project-syndicate.org/commentary/humanist-superintelligence-ai-must-be-designed-for-human-control-by-mustafa-suleyman-2025-11?utm_source=Project+Syndicate+Newsletter&utm_campaign=872fae5610-Sunday_Newsletter_2025_11_09&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_-68840aea92-107323757
It does not require superintelligence to see what we need to do: cease extracting and burning fossil fuels; draw down and sequester most of the carbon we have added to the ecosystem; begin practicing what we know about living sustainably. For example, we could all begin following the planetary health diet today and benefit greatly from the change. Still, crucial time is passing. Our planet is suffering irreparable damage, and we cannot know what help a benevolent superintelligence might bring. We are curious, are we not.
2. Malevolent ignorance is showing what it can do as US lobbying succeeds in blocking an ambitious plastics treaty and sinking an effort to reduce emissions from international shipping. As we look for a proper response, we might take heart in the spirited reaction of Pacific island nations to our President’s dismissal of their situation. https://fpif.org/countering-trump-pacific-islanders-are-leading-on-climate/#:~:text=“We%20continue%20to%20reward%20polluters,the%20world's%20leaders%20to%20act<https://fpif.org/countering-trump-pacific-islanders-are-leading-on-climate/#:~:text=%E2%80%9CWe%20continue%20to%20reward%20polluters,the%20world's%20leaders%20to%20act>.
3. The Pacific nations are going to Cop30 with a supportive finding from the International Court of Justice. That ethical judgment may not be enforceable, but it is compelling. https://go.grist.org/e/399522/-newsletter-utm-campaign-daily/2bfm35t/1917005064/h/_go8hjOhqlya8kccBfefXamn3VY36HJlb0i8GzH08jM
