1. In the last issue of this newslist an article foresaw a drop in the use of commercial methane. A study covered in the Global Energy Monitor foresees the opposite, with an enormous increase in the use of AI largely responsible. The US is expected to lead the increase, followed by China. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jan/29/gas-power-ai-climate

2. Yale Climate Connections takes a global look at energy development and concludes that the growing momentum of renewables is driven by an insuperable cost advantage. https://yaleclimateconnections.org/2026/01/despite-trump-renewable-energy-keeps-surging/

3. The Ecology Department at the U of Washington has initiated an admirable program to support adaptation of coastal areas to sea level rise. Help is offered in dealing with coastal flooding, beach and bluff erosion saltwater intrusion, and increased storm severity. https://ecology.wa.gov/blog/february-2026/building-coastal-climate-change-resilience

4. A study published in Nature Communications found that the regular succession of species in a wide range of habitats is being interrupted by environmental degradation and loss of species, with the danger that the system itself is threatened. Thanks to Cherrill Heaton for the lead. https://phys.org/news/2026-02-nature-halt-climate-gains-pace.html#google_vignette
