Greetings from DEFCon
Happy October! We hope that the beginning of the term went as smoothly as
possible for you.
We kicked off the academic year with a wonderful talk on teaching digital
humanities on a shoestring by *Danica Savonick*. If you missed it, you can
catch the recording

It was a treat! Check out our YouTube Channel

for more from our fantastic *DEFCon Speaker Series. *
Last month, we also launched our first *DEFCon Institutional Partnership*
at the University of Texas at Austin!* DEFCon *is delighted to be
partnering with *Tanya Clement, *who is leading the Digital Humanities
Initiative
<https://digitalethnicfutures.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5151ed728135669aebbd4f52c&id=fdad8cd960&e=1efca30d86>,
and *Samantha Pinto,* who is directing the Humanities Institute at
UT-Austin. A DEFCon Institutional Partnership is an opportunity for
universities that have access to resources for digital humanities to
leverage this access to support digital scholarship in ethnic studies
fields. UT-Austin is using their Faculty Fellows Seminar to support the
work of faculty in "Digital Futures and Social Justice." We had the
opportunity to meet some of the fellows, who are doing exciting work on
topics including housing justice, disinformation, and land dispossession.
Welcome to DEFCon, UT-Austin!
Our model with UT-Austin is just one of the many ways we might build on the
work of DEFCon to push our institutions to support digital ethnic futures!
*If you're interested in exploring an institutional partnership, drop us a
note at digitalethnicfutures at gmail.com <digitalethnicfutures at gmail.com>. *
Recently, we also convened our first meeting of the *DEFCon Reading Group, *an
informal opportunity to meet DEFCon colleagues as we discuss *Digital
Pedagogy in the Humanities: Concepts, Models, and Experiments*
<https://digitalethnicfutures.us20.list-manage.com/track/click?u=5151ed728135669aebbd4f52c&id=17b5d521da&e=1efca30d86>,
edited by Rebecca Frost Davis, Matthew K. Gold, Katherine D. Harris (also a
DEFCon Mentor!), and Jentery Sayers. Thank you to *Kathy Harris* for
joining us at the first meeting!
*We hope you'll join us for our upcoming events from the speaker series and
reading group! More details are below. *
Later this month, we'll be sending out a separate email launching the calls
for participation in our revamped *DEFCon Teaching Fellowships *and* DEFCon
Capacity-Building Fellowships*. We just had a great meeting yesterday with
our Mellon Foundation Program Officer *Maria Cecire* and Program
Associate *Elizabeth
Foley *to discuss changes we want to make to the programs based on our
experiences during the first year.
If you have events, resources, and publications to share with our
community, drop us a note at digitalethnicfutures at gmail.com. We're also
open to discussions about potential partnership and collaborations.
Warm wishes,
Roopika Risam, DEFCon Director, and Keja Valens, Associate Director on
behalf of the DEFCon Steering Committee
