[Grupoestudiopirateria] Updates (Grupo Internacional de los Estudios de la Piratería)

Dear colleagues,

We hope this e-mail finds you well despite these difficult times. We would like to provide you with several updates about the Grupo to move forward with the work and mission of this scholarly collective.

  *   Due to the current Covid-19 Pandemic, we have decided to postpone until further notice the second on-site congress to be held in Lima, Perú 2021. After reflecting upon the inaugural congress (St. Augustine 2020), we concluded that one of the aspects that made this experience unique was that everybody had the opportunity to meet and share their research surrounded by an environment directly marked by early modern piracy. Further on, we would like to repeat this on-site experience and guarantee a genuine collaboration in line with the past congress.

  *   However, we would like the Grupo to continue working towards the fulfillment of the members' needs, interests, and scholarly activities. We would like to propose that if you are interested in coordinating virtual workshops or forums oriented to discuss research or pedagogical strategies related to piracy studies, you are more than welcomed to do so.

  *   We would also like to remind you that if you are interested in taking part in creating the collective bibliography of recent publications of Piracy Studies, discussed in the past congress's Business Meeting (Feb. 29, 2020), please reach out to the Grupo to see how we can all collaborate and continue developing this great idea. Our colleague, Dr. Leonor Taiano, has already started a shared document (google docs) that is available (for consultation and for making contributions) through this link:

Esperamos que este correo les encuentre bien a pesar de las circunstancias actuales. Les escribimos para compartirles novedades y darle continuidad a los trabajos y la misión del Grupo.


  *   Debido a la pandemia de Covid-19 determinamos posponer hasta nuevo aviso, el segundo congreso originalmente pautado para ser celebrado en Lima, Perú (2021). La celebración del congreso inaugural en un lugar como San Agustín (2020), cuya historia se relaciona con el tema de la piratería durante la modernidad temprana resultó una experiencia única de acuerdo con las reflexiones y comentarios compartidos. Más adelante nos gustaría repetir esta experiencia en un contexto presencial que garantice la colaboración genuina a tono con la experiencia del congreso anterior.

  *   Sin embargo, nos gustaría que el Grupo continúe con su labor de atender las necesidades, intereses e investigación de los miembros. Por esta razón, les invitamos a coordinar coloquios, seminarios or foros virtuales orientados a la enseñanza o la investigación relacionadas al tema de la piratería.

  *   Además, les queremos recodar que si están interesados en contribuir a la creación de la bibliografía colectiva que discutimos en el Business Meeting durante el pasado congreso (Feb. 29, 2020), pueden dirigirse al grupo para sugerir cómo todos podemos colaborar y contribuir para el desarrollo de esta magnífica idea.
