1. Using data from the Landsat 8 satellite, NASA has initiated a new tool to track the movement of ice sheets and glaciers. GoLIVE covers the entire planet every sixteen days. The goal is information in close to real time about melt and sea level rise. http://www.nature.com/news/satellite-system-tracks-glaciers-flow-in-real-time-1.21165

2. To maintain profits from fossil fuels and the industries connected to them, you must continue to convince people that those sectors of the economy will remain profitable. Once that illusion is broken, the carbon bubble pops. We would be well advised to begin deflating it deliberately. The Trump and Putin administrations are committed to maintaining the bubble as long as possible. Their policies leave us only more vulnerable to bubble burst. https://medium.com/@AlexSteffen/trump-putin-and-the-pipelines-to-nowhere-742d745ce8fd#.n88u7gf55

3. Obama's energy efficiency measures are already saving billions of dollars and will save trillions if allowed to remain in place. The linked analysis calculates only the money saved on energy, not that saved on dealing with the climate destruction that energy would cause if produced by fossil fuels. http://aceee.org/blog/2016/12/us-will-save-trillions-dollars-if

4. Connecticut's Green Bank is a public-private partnership which has financed nearly 215 megawatts of clean power in 20,00 projects. It has a particular interest in funding commercial PACE installations. The first such state bank, its model might be particularly attractive in a Trump administration. Patrick Parenteau sent this item. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/07122016/connecticut-green-bank-renewable-energy-finance-trump

5. Warming water can absorb less oxygen. Around the world, oxygen-depleted zones of the ocean are growing. Bacteria can adapt by switching their respiration from oxygen to nitrogen, and when they do, they release nitrogen dioxide, a potent greenhouse gas. http://phys.org/news/2016-12-bacteria-survive-marine-environments-starved.html

6. The weakening temperature difference between the Arctic and the equator is influencing your weather. The effects can be severe. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/dec/19/arctic-ice-melt-already-affecting-weather-patterns-where-you-live-right-now

7. "The Library of Congress, California Digital Library, University of North Texas Libraries, Internet Archive, George Washington University Libraries, Stanford University Libraries, and the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) are leading a collaborative project to harvest and preserve public U.S. Government websites at the conclusion of the current Presidential administration ending on January 20, 2017." Guerilla archivists at the U of Toronto are working in several ways to preserve a working database for climate science in anticipation of the Trump years. https://cleantechnica.com/2016/12/19/protecting-americas-environmental-websites-data-trump/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IM-cleantechnica+%28CleanTechnica%29

8. In making possible at least the first George W. Bush term and now the Trump presidency, the electoral college has hampered our ability to deal with climate change. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/12/19/the-electoral-college-is-thwarting-our-ability-to-battle-global-warming/?utm_term=.78f0783d5b98

9. Sketches of Trump appointees show why people are working now to protect our ability to deal with climate change. http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2016/12/19/us/politics/climate-change-trump-administration.html?emc=edit_tnt_20161219&nlid=43628374&tntemail0=y&_r=0 ?
