1. "If Trump turns off the satellites, California will launch its own damn satellite." Governor Brown to the American Geophysical Union meeting in San Francisco, 14 December, 2016. In that feisty spirit, Peter Sinclair had some words of his own for the meeting. He spoke about the incoming administration and the future of the earth. https://climatecrocks.com/2016/12/14/sleeping-giant-awakening/ Governor Brown told the 20,000 assembled scientists that they were not facing only politicians. "We're facing big oil, we're facing big financial structures that are at odds with the survivability of our world. It's up to you as truth tellers, truth seekers, to mobilize all your efforts to fight back." https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2016/dec/15/climate-change-conference-agu-san-francisco-donald-trump

2. Last month Judge Anne Aiken issued a decision in Juliana vs. U.S. that the plaintiffs, all 21 of the young people, and indeed the rest of us, have the right to a stable climate system, that it cannot be legislated away, and that their case for a scientifically grounded climate action program should proceed to a trial. President Obama has the opportunity to negotiate a settlement before he leaves office. https://theconversation.com/earth-on-the-docket-why-obama-cant-ignore-this-climate-lawsuit-by-americas-youth-69193?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=When%20is%20your%20holiday%20drinking%20too%20much&utm_content=When%20is%20your%20holiday%20drinking%20too%20much+CID_2787f98010a940de2895c6124a93b43a&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=Earth%20on%20the%20docket%20Why%20Obama%20cant%20ignore%20this%20climate%20lawsuit%20by%20Americas%20youth

3. CNN has put together a brief interactive series on the Sixth Extinction now in progress. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2016/12/specials/vanishing/

4. Totten Glacier, the East Antarctic's largest, is indeed melting from below as warm waters undermine its stability, just as in the West Antarctic. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2016/12/16/warm-ocean-water-is-slamming-into-and-melting-the-biggest-glacier-in-east-antarctica/?utm_term=.a99e1822be80

5. A politically distasteful task in preparing for climate change is to plan for the retreat and relocation of coastal communities. The Obama administration is taking it on with the formation of an interagency working group. https://www.bloomberg.com/view/articles/2016-12-16/obama-s-final-push-to-adapt-to-climate-change I wonder if this is a prelude to new sea level rise projections.

6. The glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau supply water to nearly two billion people. They are now melting at a rate of 7% a year. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/tibet-melting-glaciers-avalanches_us_584e552de4b04c8e2bb061ee ?
