1. Michael Bloomberg and Carl Pope have co-authored Climate of Hope: How Cities, Businesses, and Citizens Can Save the Planet. The book describes how to take climate action in default of US state and national actors. Brian Paradise sends the review. https://www.fastcompany.com/40407139/michael-bloomberg-says-cities-must-now-lead-the-way-on-climate-change

2. A study of AskReddit entries detailing why people changed from denying to affirming climate change yields four main reasons people came to understand the situation better, and holds hints for those of us who deal with the general public. http://www.yaleclimateconnections.org/2017/04/changing-minds-on-a-changing-climate/

3. In Germany homeowners, including apartment dwellers, can buy a home power storage battery from Sonnen for $4,300 and get 2200 kWh per year free energy for ten years. The batteries will be used to even out the grid load and to provide a constant energy supply to Sonnen customers. http://www.yaleclimateconnections.org/2017/04/changing-minds-on-a-changing-climate/

4. A coal company is planning to turn an old strip mine in East KY into the state's largest solar farm. http://www.courier-journal.com/story/tech/science/environment/2017/04/18/coal-company-plans-huge-solar-farm-strip-mine/100597672/

5. The National Flood Insurance Program is privatizing some of its coverage, and using reinsurance to reduce their risk for the rest. Flood insurance rates are rising to meet the new risks from storms and sea level rise, and the situation is becoming unstable. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/04/18/magazine/when-rising-seas-transform-risk-into-certainty.html?_r=0

6. If you are in the St. Augustine area, you may want to participate in the Earth Day Environmental Challenge Weekend. Admission is free. Friday night a reception begins at 5 with free light food and drink, leading to a panel discussion headed by Mayor Nancy Shaver. Topics include sea level rise, fracking, and pending legislation. I'll be speaking along with Jane West, Neil Armingeon, Eric Handy, Chris Wadelton, Hunter Miller, and Bill Hamilton. Saturday morning an hour's walk begins at 9 in support of the March for Science events around the world, returning at 10 for music, face painting, exhibits, and artwork, which continue until 4. All events are at the Willie Galimore Center, 399 Riberia Street. https://www.visitstaugustine.com/event/environmental-challenge-weekend ?
