1. Some recent studies indicate that, considering warming to which we are already committed, we have reached 1.5C, and that unless we take determined action we have little chance of limiting warming to 2C. So, we must take determined action. (The significance of the "dangerous" thresholds is that beyond them we have an increasing chance, through positive feedbacks, of incurring global heating growth we cannot control. 1.5C is dangerous, but safer than 2C.) https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/07/31/we-only-have-a-5-percent-chance-of-avoiding-dangerous-global-warming-a-study-finds/?utm_term=.a8e184d0f730

3. As solar brings power to some of the most remote areas of Asia, the developers are often women. http://climatenewsnetwork.net/women-take-control-solar-revolution/?utm_source=Climate+News+Network&utm_campaign=dd74204afb-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_08_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_1198ea8936-dd74204afb-38803053

4. Greenland's Petermann Glacier is showing new signs of instability. If it disintegrates it will bring inland ice in its wake. https://climatecrocks.com/2017/08/02/antarctic-berg-gets-news-but-look-to-greenland-for-real-iceberg-impacts/

5. Large parts of India could be struck by killing heat waves unless current warming trends abate sharply and soon. The Ganges and Indus river basins in general would suffer such events by the last quarter of the century. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2017/aug/02/climate-change-to-cause-humid-heatwaves-that-will-kill-even-healthy-people

6. Amalgamated Bank, owned by the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of North American, is the continent's first bank to divest from fossil fuels. http://www.nationalobserver.com/2016/09/21/analysis/american-bank-just-became-first-continent-pull-its-investments-fossil-fuels

7. A colder area south of Greenland may indicate a slowing of the AMOC influenced by melting Arctic sea ice. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/08/02/this-strange-spot-over-the-atlantic-isnt-getting-warmer-scientists-think-they-may-know-why/?nid&utm_term=.223ac8133da8

8. The third 100-year drought in the Amazon in the last decade was due in part to climate change, and in part to deforestation. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2017/aug/03/study-finds-human-influence-in-the-amazons-third-1-in-100-year-drought-since-2005

9. Solar is now the most popular source of new energy worldwide, followed by wind. This Australian article mentions that in that country the cost of new renewable energy is lower than the wholesale cost of electricity. https://theconversation.com/solar-is-now-the-most-popular-form-of-new-electricity-generation-worldwide-81678 ?
