1. Paris is banning gasoline and diesel autos effective in 2030, ten years before such a ban goes into effect in the whole of France. http://www.reuters.com/article/us-france-paris-autos/paris-plans-to-banish-all-but-electric-cars-by-2030-idUSKBN1CH0SI

The UK is also banning gas cars by 2040, Sweden and Scotland by 2032, India by 2030, and Norway by 2025. China plans a ban but has not announced a date. http://grist.org/briefly/youre-probably-going-to-be-driving-an-electric-car-soon/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

2. Electric vehicles are getting close to outcompeting the fossils as they achieve a 200-mile range and a price within $3,00 of conventional cars. Oil demand for private autos is set to peak and fall. Oil demand for aviation, trucking, shipping, and plastics may be tougher to uproot. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/10102017/electric-vehicles-killing-oil-demand-china-gm-ev-future-automakers?utm_source=Inside+Climate+News&utm_campaign=39b8a61132-Weekly+Newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_29c928ffb5-39b8a61132-326454481

We still need a price on carbon.

3. Coal is no longer competitive in the energy market. The Trump administration has succeeded in only temporary obstructions of the energy transition. Even Republican legislators are beginning to back measures to deal with climate disruption. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/climate-consensus-97-per-cent/2017/oct/16/the-war-on-coal-is-over-coal-lost

4. Germany's energiewende has been quite successful in developing renewable energy as a share of national production. Its experience has many lessons for other nations. http://reneweconomy.com.au/spectacular-success-germanys-energiewende-needs-done-next-20063/?utm_source=RE+Daily+Newsletter&utm_campaign=27b82f47cd-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_10_15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_46a1943223-27b82f47cd-40325881

The NREL report on US solar pv costs in Q1 2016 about 2/3 of the way through the article is worth a look. Matthews has a typo of kW for W in quoting costs from the report.

5. War on the EPA, a PBS Frontline feature, recounts the background of the current attempt to neutralize the Environmental Protection Agency. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/frontline/film/war-on-the-epa/ ?
