1. As coastal flooding increases in FL, more and more communities are beginning to realize the need to plan for sea level rise. In Northeast FL, Mayor Nancy Shaver of St. Augustine is the leading voice. Cherrill Heaton sends this overview of FL planning. http://gatehouseprojects.com/risingseas/uneven-preparation/ On September 16-17 a team from the PBS series FRONTLINE was in the state to film a story about planning for sea level rise in FL. Mayor Shaver will be a central feature. Our most important planning challenge is relocation, but that is still a topic avoided in public.

2. Protecting cities against flooding often involves finding ways to promote safe drainage. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2017/sep/25/what-flood-proof-city-china-dhaka-houston

3. Partly through intelligent planning and partly through luck, some US cities are better equipped to be livable in a heated world. http://www.businessinsider.com/best-us-cities-escape-climate-change-2017-9/#salt-lake-city-utah-9

4. Pine Island Glacier in the West Antarctic has calved another huge iceberg in a way which indicates the ice sheet's instability. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2017/09/25/a-key-antarctic-glacier-just-lost-a-piece-of-ice-four-times-the-size-of-manhattan/?nid&utm_term=.77d589d5b8ba

5. An assessment in Science of our progress in countering global warming urges acceleration. Four steps: Change the whole system, not just its parts. Link up sustainable technologies. Build societal and business support. Phase out existing systems (for example, incandescent bulbs). https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/7xk454/scientists-urge-system-change-to-avoid-catastrophic-climate-change

The Science article, "Sociotechnical transitions for deep decarbonization: accelerating innovation is as important as climate polity," by Frank Geels et al. Subs. reqd. http://www.sciencemagazinedigital.org/sciencemagazine/22_september_2017?sub_id=KOh704Udnq9u&u1=20117138&folio=1242&pg=38#pg38

6. The British airline Easy Jet says that it could be flying electric planes within a decade, and is working toward that end. The planes will be quieter and cheaper. https://www.theguardian.com/business/2017/sep/27/easyjet-electric-planes-wright-electric-flights ?
