1. The New York Times Magazine for August 1 will feature a single story, "Losing Earth," about the period 1979-89, when we discovered global warming and came close to acting. You can sign up for the magazine newsletter. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/07/26/magazine/climate-issue-signup.html

2. John Ketchum of NextEra Energy reports on the current ($0.015 a kilowatt hour) and expected ($0.005-.01) costs of energy storage. That would mean a combined wind and solar cost of around $0.025 a kilowatt hour-with storage. Ludicrously low, as Peter Sinclair says. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/07/26/energy-storage-prices-heading-from-low-to-ludicrously-low/

3. Portugal is already generating 100% of its power renewably. It is nonetheless adding a gigawatt of new solar power because power with storage has gotten so cheap that they can now drop the subsidies they were paying for standby fossil fuel plants. It also plans to increase its energy exports. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/07/25/31-new-solar-power-plants-bring-1-gigawatt-of-renewables-to-portugal/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+IM-cleantechnica+%28CleanTechnica%29

4. Chris Hayes, a MSNBC host who has been active in covering climate in the past, tweeted that he doesn't cover climate change's role in extreme weather more because it is a ratings killer. The ensuing exchange includes contradiction, suggestions, and support. https://grist.org/article/is-climate-change-a-ratings-killer-or-is-something-wrong-with-for-profit-media/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

5. Climate change is indeed implicated in recent weather events. (The Greek wildfires are linked to drouth and hot weather. Heat waves, storms, and the changing patterns of the seasons are more direct effects.) https://grist.org/article/is-climate-change-a-ratings-killer-or-is-something-wrong-with-for-profit-media/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

6. The heatwave in Europe has been made more than twice as likely by climate change. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/jul/27/heatwave-made-more-than-twice-as-likely-by-climate-change-scientists-find ?
