1. Norfolk, VA, has been led by unusual land subsidence to deal with sea level rise energetically and early. The city is more and more concentrating on its areas which are not at risk, improving them and making them more attractive to those who should retreat from areas more at-risk. https://insideclimatenews.org/news/15052018/norfolk-virginia-navy-sea-level-rise-flooding-urban-planning-poverty-coastal-resilience

2. In clips from a Q&A session Elon Musk exhibits little patience with investors upset with Tesla's volatility. But the real story in the linked article is in the five-minute interview with GM CEO Mary Barra at the bottom, in which she says that GM is committed to a future of electric vehicles. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/05/29/ev-update-wall-street-butthurt-after-elon-musks-phone-call-gm-ceo-bullish-on-evs/

3. Sila Nanotechnologies intends to increase the efficiency of lithium-ion batteries 40% by replacing the graphite anode with a silicon powder. They plan to begin producing their powder for phone batteries next year and have an eye on the electric vehicle market. A general 40% increase in EV range would mean an easier job building adequate numbers of charging stations. https://www.forbes.com/sites/alexknapp/2018/05/29/black-magic-powder-sila-nanotechnologies-gives-lithium-ion-batteries-a-double-digit-power-boost/#3c6a10904c8b

4. California is intermittently shutting down or throttling back significant solar and wind power to deal with temporary oversupply which drops energy prices below cost. The possible cures are increased (and cheaper) energy storage and new transmission lines to broaden the grid. https://www.technologyreview.com/s/611188/california-is-throttling-back-record-levels-of-solarand-thats-bad-news-for-climate-goals/?utm_source=MIT+Technology+Review&utm_campaign=6c9f1795a7-weekly_roundup_2018-05-31_edit&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_997ed6f472-6c9f1795a7-154060389&goal=0_997ed6f472-6c9f1795a7-154060389&mc_cid=6c9f1795a7&mc_eid=fc22084f2f

5. Kids are at the worst health risk from climate change, and poor kids most of all. https://grist.org/article/mold-asthma-ptsd-a-hotter-climate-is-terrible-for-kids/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=newsletter&utm_campaign=daily

6. Trump has not succeeded in derailing the Paris Agreement in the year since he withdrew us. http://www.wri.org/blog/2018/05/7-signs-progress-year-national-climate-action

Still, the US defection seems to have dampened the efforts of some nations and may have contributed to inaction at the Bonn conference. http://www.climatechangenews.com/2018/05/31/trump-damaged-paris-agreement-say-architects/

Trump has not even succeeded in derailing all efforts in the country he purports to lead. The article details the counterforce of US local and state governments, along with the Ford and GM support for electric vehicles, and calls for Americans to support climate action as the world looks to strengthen the Paris Agreement in 2020. http://www.wri.org/blog/2018/05/world-moving-trump-announced-intent-withdraw-paris-agreement-climate-change

7. Climate Home News lists eleven ways the Paris Agreement is making itself felt for the good. http://www.climatechangenews.com/2018/05/14/11-ways-paris-climate-deal-working-real-world/

8. Arizona SU has organized the New Climate Adaptation Leadership series of webinars. The first featured a presentation of California documentation of adaptation activity, an account of the movement of people in the Mississippi Delta from submerging areas to drier land, and a report of decades of environmental activism from a Detroit leader. This and the second webinar, Innovations on Climate Solutions, are available on the site; webinars three through five are coming. http://securityandsustainabilityforum.org/the-new-climate-adaptation-leadership-series-9368 ?
