1. A Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory study of costs and grid management issues under increasing amounts of variable renewable energy illustrates how renewables lead both to lower average costs and greater cost variability. Utilities are likely to turn to an increasing use of batteries along with efficiency and usage programs suited to high and lows of daily power production. https://theconversation.com/as-more-solar-and-wind-come-onto-the-grid-prices-go-down-but-new-questions-come-up-96704?utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20May%2023%202018%20-%20102439007&utm_content=Latest%20from%20The%20Conversation%20for%20May%2023%202018%20-%20102439007+Version+A+CID_99a7d3bc9d14158485279e7ad83f9f39&utm_source=campaign_monitor_us&utm_term=As%20more%20solar%20and%20wind%20come%20onto%20the%20grid%20prices%20go%20down%20but%20new%20questions%20come%20up

2. The transition to electric vehicles is proceeding more rapidly than we anticipated. Dropping battery prices and the intrinsic advantage of a vehicle with 20 moving parts over one with 2000, and of the superior performance and longevity of electric vehicles, indicate that we have reached the tipping point to a massive shift to the EV, according to the guidelines in a video shot two years ago. Watch the clip at the bottom (a report on the energy transition in general in eight minutes) to hear the CEO of Shell say that his next car will be electric. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/05/23/as-grid-evolves-evs-just-keep-getting-cleaner-more-competitive/

3. BP is investing in an Israeli company which intends to provide a new generation of lithium-ion batteries which can charge in five minutes. "We are committed to be the fuel provider of choice - no matter what car our customers drive." https://www.greentechmedia.com/articles/read/bp-invests-20m-in-tech-to-charge-ev-batteries-in-minutes#gs.qf8pj5Y

4. If you are interested in a mid-price EV with over 200 miles range, or interested in fantasizing about one, here is a comparison of the Chevrolet Bolt and the Tesla 3. http://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-model-3-chevy-bolt-comparison-pictures-2018-4

The Tesla 3 has a shocking braking problem, but Elon Musk says he is on it. https://qz.com/1285174/consumer-reports-just-got-elon-musk-to-fix-teslas-model-3-braking-software/

5. Electric cars are a bridge to rethinking the design of transportation. https://theconversation.com/not-so-fast-why-the-electric-vehicle-revolution-will-bring-problems-of-its-own-94980

6. A Stanford U study found that strict controls on greenhouse gas emissions would buoy the world's economy, benefitting 90% of the population and avoiding about $30 trillion spent to cope with heat waves, droughts, and floods. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/may/23/hitting-toughest-climate-target-will-save-world-30tn-in-damages-analysis-shows

7. Warming will lead to a drop in the nutritional value of rice and other crops. https://www.sciencenews.org/article/carbon-dioxide-increases-rice-loses-b-vitamins-nutrients?utm_source=email&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=latest-newsletter-v2?
