1. The latest installment of a 5 gigawatt solar project in Dubai is 250 megawatts of concentrating solar power at 2.4 cents/kilowatt hour. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/11/11/acwa-power-secures-250-megawatt-solar-pv-at-2-4%C2%A2-kwh/

ACWA Power has commissioned 200 megwatt solar PV capacity at the Dubai solar park, and is now developing an additional 900 megawatt capacity.

2. The International Energy Agency has released a report observing that while the transition to renewable energy is well underway it will not be enough to blunt global warming without energetic measures. Even if we cease using oil to make fuel for autos, 80% of oil goes into heavy trucks, ships, airplanes, plastics, and other petrochemicals. We need to make rapid advances into decarbonizing all those. Also, Asia’s coal plants are relatively new—15 years old, as opposed to 41 in the US. They still need to be retired. https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/12/climate/global-energy-forecast.html

The International Energy Agency said renewables were poised to surpass coal by 2040. But more is still needed to stop climate change.

Bloomberg’s story on the report emphasizes the role Asia plays in future emissions. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-11-13/electrifying-the-world-no-panacea-for-global-warming-iea-says

Driving electric cars and scrapping your natural gas-fired boiler won’t make a dent in global carbon emissions, and may even increase pollution levels.

3. The International Energy Agency (along with the US Energy Information Administration) has been almost comically pessimistic about the energy conversion in past projections. https://www.vox.com/2015/10/12/9510879/iea-underestimate-renewables

The difficulties the IEA points out in the current report are still worth attention. Australia’s Renew Economy observes that the IEA seems to be taking a new and forceful position on the need to eliminate coal by growth in wind and solar. https://reneweconomy.com.au/coal-dumped-as-iea-turns-to-wind-and-solar-to-solve-climate-challenge-66916/?utm_source=RE+Daily+Newsletter&utm_campaign=49d0c40943-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_11_12_09_44&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_46a1943223-49d0c40943-40325881

IEA abandons thermal coal industry, saying world must turn to wind and solar if it has any hope of getting anywhere near required climate targets.

4. While voters in Arizona turned down a renewable energy goal and Washington voted against a carbon tax, the new governors of five other states campaigned on platforms including goals of 100% renewable energy, and two other new governors on strong but somewhat lesser targets. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/11/12/7-incoming-governors-strongly-support-renewable-energy-goals/
