1. Two weeks ago a Nature study found that the oceans have absorbed 60% more heat from manmade warming than we had supposed. Authors have now acknowledged that the uncertainty of their conclusions is greater than the article had represented. An independent investigator identified a math error. https://www.washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2018/11/14/scientists-acknowledge-key-errors-study-how-fast-oceans-are-warming/?utm_term=.dc6ca70f046a

Scientists acknowledge key errors in study of how fast the oceans are warming - The Washington Post<https://www.washingtonpost.com/energy-environment/2018/11/14/scientists-acknowledge-key-errors-study-how-fast-oceans-are-warming/?utm_term=.dc6ca70f046a>

A major study claimed the oceans were warming much faster than previously thought. But researchers now say they can’t necessarily make that claim.

2. Hydrogen fuel cells for autos have long been popular with fossil fuel interests, as the source of the hydrogen has typically been natural gas. Recently the emphasis has been on hydrolysis of water as a source. Until the power supply is decarbonized, though, fuel cell cars will have more emissions than electric cars, and more than standard internal combustion cars. Even then they are power hogs. They also cost much more and have higher maintenance costs than battery EVs. https://thedriven.io/2018/11/15/hydrogen-fuel-cell-cars-have-three-times-emissions-of-battery-evs-uq-study/?utm_source=RE+Daily+Newsletter&utm_campaign=3ab59767bf-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2018_11_15_12_28&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_46a1943223-3ab59767bf-40325881

A major new study from researchers at The University of Queensland warns that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will likely have three times the emissions of battery electric vehicles, if using the main grid, and won’t make much environmental sense until the Australian grid is largely decarbonised.

3. Natural solutions can have a large impact on greenhouse emissions in the US. Reforestation would be the most significant program, followed by improved agriculture. Natural solutions can prevent a fifth of greenhouse gas emissions, a greater impact than removing all cars and trucks from the road. https://phys.org/news/2018-11-reveals-natural-solutions-global.html

4. A study of the warming in store by national goals should inspire new goals at the UN climate conference next month. China, Russia, and Canada’s goals would drive us over 5C of warming by 2100, the US to 4C, and the EU to 3C. The best goal among major economies is India’s, which would lead us to about 2C. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/nov/16/climate-change-champions-still-pursuing-devastating-policies-new-study-reveals

5. John Kerry warns that we have serious problems with the climate at hand and instead of confronting them we fritter our time away with Brexit and Trump’s truculence. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/nov/16/john-kerry-europe-must-tackle-climate-change-or-face-migration-chaos

In the discussion with the Observer’s chief political commentator, Andrew Rawnsley, Kerry said: “We are heading for catastrophe unless we respond to some life-threatening challenges very rapidly.

6. As if to illustrate what Kerry means, Bill McKibben surveys our changing world in “How Extreme Weather is Shrinking the Planet: With wildfires, heat waves, and rising sea levels, large tracts of the earth are becoming uninhabitable, but the fossil-fuel industry continues its assault on the facts”. 7. South Florida’s Babcock Ranch is a new sustainable community which aspires to be the home of 50,000 people. It is a little upscale—homes start at $200,000, and no multi-family units are planned—but there is much to admire which could be imitated in a more economically diverse community, including their moves to restore natural drainage, their provision for green space, and their blending of commercial and residential development. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/11/17/florida-town-is-a-green-experiment/
