1. The Green New Deal would decarbonize our economy with attention to social justice and a sustainable material culture. We may have to drag some politicians along. https://www.newyorker.com/news/news-desk/creating-a-road-map-for-a-green-new-deal?mbid=nl_Daily%20111918&CNDID=18164692&utm_source=nl&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Daily%20111918&utm_content=&utm_brand=tny&utm_mailing=Daily%20111918&hasha=8c547d53af6ff6fc7d49cb8612c07102&hashb=e0cd75d11efd01a0b77ab9e6aebc9acfab41dac0&spMailingID=14647428&spUserID=MTMzMTc5Njc3ODE1S0&spJobID=1521493896&spReportId=MTUyMTQ5Mzg5NgS2

As the window for large-scale action on climate change closes, direct government intervention in other parts of the carbon economy will become more urgent.

2. The Green New Deal is more of a vision of our transition to a sustainable culture than a well-defined set of proposals. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is leading a group drafting a Green New Deal plan for 2020. https://www.eenews.net/stories/1060106501

What is a Green New Deal? A Green New Deal is a big, bold transformation of the economy to tackle the twin crises of inequality and climate change. The status quo economy leaves millions behind. It exposes working class families, communities of color, and others to stagnant wages, toxic pollution ...

3. RE 100 is an association of corporations committed to source 100% of their energy renewably. This year it added 37 companies for a total of 155, representing 5% of global GDP and 188 terawatt-hours annually. European companies are the largest geographical block. https://cleantechnica.com/2018/11/19/re100-members-increase-renewable-energy-by-41-as-initiative-spreads-around-the-globe/

5. We're facing the same thing in Florida with sea level rise--but in slow motion, and greatly magnified. There are six million people south of Lake Okeechobee, and all are likely to be displaced in the next few years. All the coastal communities are in the same shape. We're not talking about it, and our new governor is not likely to concern himself with climate planning any more than the last one, who actively discouraged it.
My “next few years” guess is based on the accelerating rate of sea level rise and the estimate that the water supply and drainage in South Florida are now both inches from compromise. Public knowledge of the problem goes back at least to Florida Atlantic University’s Southeast Florida’s Resilient Water Resources, published in 2009. Section 4.2. http://www.ces.fau.edu/files/projects/climate_change/SE_Florida_Resilient_Water_Resources.pdf

Figure 1 – Schematic diagram of the hydrological cycle in Southeast Florida. Southeast Florida receives approximately 60 inches of year annually. Most of Southeast Florida sits on the Biscayne Aquifer, an open coastal aquifer of high porosity and transmissivity.

The study was epitomized in 2011. The chart on page 4 traces water compromise and sea level rise. http://www.ces.fau.edu/files/projects/climate_change/SE_Florida_Resilient_Water_FAU2011.pdf

the water infrastructure in florida is complex and capital intensive. much of it was designed and installed more than 50 years ago, long before climate change was considered

The Green New Deal is going to require a dimension of emergency management.

6. The wide-spread effects of climate change are demanding, and beginning to get, concerned attention in the media. https://climatecrocks.com/2018/11/20/how-pointless-is-my-life-journalist-has-rare-moment-of-self-awareness-on-climate/
